That's right, it's Asbestos Awareness Week! WorkSafe will be working with industry partners this week to drive home the fact that there are no excuses for not protecting workers from the risk of asbestos exposure.

Asbestos exposure is New Zealand’s number one workplace killer. Despite the serious health risks of asbestos exposure being widely known for 80+ years, around 220 people die each year from asbestos-related disease.

Center Port Limited approached ATL Group and our partnered demolition company about the asbestos removal and demolition of the former storage shed located on an isolated wharf. The asbestos was located in Super 6 roofing and cladding along with associated ACD from the degradation of the roof.

ATL, with the experience and knowledge we have, were able to achieve an excellent result and ensure our clients' satisfaction, despite the many challenges thrown (and blown! 💨) our way.

Another win for a Mesothelioma sufferer.
80% of Mesothelioma cases are caused by asbestos exposure but in Cardow's case it is believed to have been caused by excessive radiotherapy. Either way it is great news that his pallitave treatment funding will be covered by ACC and sets a precedent for other victims of this terrible disease.

We wish you all the very best Jamie and we're celebrating with you over this life changing news!

Newshub first met Cardow last month when ACC had accepted his claim, but then stalled on paying for the $300,000-a-year immunotherapy.

You might have heard about asbestos, but what does it look like and why is it so dangerous?
There are 6 known types of asbestos which are all naturally occurring. At first glance they may all just look like pretty rocks but in fact asbestos is one of the worst known carcinogens and can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis and other cancers.
The substance is banned in over 50 countries including New Zealand but is still used in many countries today. Unfortunately, there are thousands of buildings across New Zealand that still contain asbestos including workplaces and schools.

1) What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was once used as insulation because it was inexpensive and had excellent fireproofing properties. However, as it has been determined to cause lung cancer when breathed into the lungs, it is now banned in New Zealand for new construction projects.

2) How does asbestos exposure occur?
Exposure occurs when asbestos fibers are released into the air during disturbing activities like demolition or renovation of buildings containing asbestos materials.

3) How does exposure happen without breaking the law?
Work Safe NZ regulations specify how employers must take precautionary measures when working with asbestos products. For more info, please visit - www.worksafe.govt.nz

🧐 Did you know Asbestos used to be mined in NZ?
In the Cobb River area of Kahurangi National Park a total of around 5000 tonnes of Asbestos was mined by the Hume Company until 1964. It's rather fortunate that the asbestos was of low grade (short fibres with limited commercial use) and that interest fizzled, forcing the closure of the mine. The aptly named 'Asbestos Cottage' nearby is now owned by the Department of Conversation and details the lives of the reclusive prospectors who lived there for many years.
Scary stuff indeed!👻
