Summer's just around the corner, which means it's time to get your display game on! Markets, food festivals, and pop-ups are coming, and a lot more people staring at what’s sitting on your counter. 👀☀️

If your setup is looking a bit “she’ll be right”, this might be the time to tidy it up.

At Cambrian Plastics, we can custom-make clear acrylic food displays to suit your space — from counter shields and tray covers to display shelves, case panels and market stall setups.

For a lot of food display jobs, 4.5–6 mm clear acrylic is a good starting point, with thicker material used when the span gets wider or the display needs to carry more weight.

It’s clear, lightweight and easy to customise, handy when you want customers looking at the food, not the display.

And once the summer rush kicks in, cleaning is pretty simple too:

Soft cloth + mild soapy water = sweet as.

Rough scrubbers and strong ammonia cleaners?
Yeah… maybe give those a miss. They can scratch or craze the acrylic.

Ever wondered how a flat acrylic plastic sheet becomes a skylight? 👀

It starts flat.

The sheet is heated until it becomes flexible, then air is blown from underneath to push it into shape.

Once the form is right and the plastic has cooled, the excess material is trimmed away and the edges are finished.

Then comes the final tidy-up: debris out, clean finish in.

It looks simple when you see the finished skylight, but there’s a lot happening between the first flat sheet and the final shape.

Heating.
Air forming.
Cooling.
Trimming.
Finishing.

And it all happens here at Cambrian Plastics in Auckland.

How thick should acrylic actually be?

The answer isn’t always “thicker is better”.

It depends on what you’re making, how wide it needs to span, how much weight it carries, and how the finished piece will be used.

That’s why acrylic can look completely different from one job to the next.

A wall-mounted brochure holder needs to carry multiple A4 pockets while keeping everything organised and easy to browse.



A clear acrylic Z-shaped table needs enough thickness to feel stable while still keeping that light, minimal look. ✨

A retail make-up display needs to hold products neatly without distracting from what’s being sold.



A lighting cover needs to work with the space around it. 🛋️

The same goes for shelving: the wider the span and the heavier the load, the more support you’ll need. Sometimes that means thicker acrylic. Sometimes it means changing the design rather than simply increasing thickness.

That’s the part people don’t always see.

At Cambrian Plastics , we’re not only cutting sheets to size. A lot of custom fabrication starts with understanding what the piece needs to do, then working out the material, thickness, shape and fabrication process around it.

A boat window doesn’t just come off a machine.
A lot of the work happens before the acrylic ever gets near the final cut.

For this one, we started with the old boat window and used it to draw out the new template. From there, the acrylic was cut to shape, then an acrylic strip was made to follow the curve of the window.

That strip might look simple, but it matters. It gives the router a stable surface to work against and helps the cut follow the curve more smoothly.
Once the main shape is done, the job moves on.
The edges still need attention.
Saw marks are scraped back by hand, the surface is checked, and every bit of debris has to be removed before the final finish.
Then comes one of the most satisfying parts, flame polishing.
That final pass brings the edge back to a clean, clear finish and gives the window that finished look you expect when it goes back onto the boat.

What we like about jobs like this is that you can see how many different skills go into one finished piece.
There’s measuring.
There’s templating.
There’s cutting and routing.
There’s hand-finishing.
There’s polishing.

And it all happens under one roof here at Cambrian Plastics in Auckland.

So when you bring us an old boat window, you’re not just sending it through a machine.
It moves through a process, and through different hands, before it becomes the finished replacement you take home.
