Happy to be supporting Whangārei Girls' High School first XI.
Good luck for their upcoming tournament next week 🏑
Last night marked a memorable occasion as the WGHS 1st XI Hockey team of 2025 took to the turf for their inaugural match against a spirited team of WGHS Old Girls at Hockey Northland. The event drew an impressive crowd, with former students, teachers, and supporters gathering to reconnect with the legacy of Girls' High hockey.
The match was a fantastic display of talent, heart, and school pride, as our current players went head-to-head with alumni who once wore the same colours with pride. The atmosphere was electric, filled with laughter, cheers, and moments of nostalgia.
Following the game, everyone came together for a shared kai, a wonderful opportunity to reflect, reminisce and build bonds across generations. During the gathering, our 2025 1st XI players were proudly presented with their tournament shirts, symbolizing not just their selection but their place in the ongoing legacy of WGHS Hockey.
Adding to the sense of occasion, a heartfelt letter from Black Sticks legend Katie Doar was read aloud, offering words of inspiration and encouragement to the team as they prepare for their upcoming tournament season.
We were also honoured to hear from one of our own past WGHS student, hockey standout and past black stick Alana Millington who spoke passionately about the enduring legacy of WGHS hockey, the friendship it fosters and the pride that comes from wearing the blue and yellow.
It was a night that beautifully honoured the legacy of WGHS Hockey — a celebration of the past, a showcase of the present, and a glimpse into a promising future.
A heartfelt thank you goes to our dedicated 1st XI managers and coaches Tracey Wallis, Viivi Ronkko, Daniel Harrington, and Alma Quirey whose tireless effort and passion made this special event possible. We are incredibly grateful for everything they do behind the scenes to grow the game and nurture the legacy of WGHS Hockey.
