Congratulations to Connor Tonks on completing his Fitting and Machining apprenticeship

Connor is pictured at Myriad Engineering in Seaview, Wellington, alongside Managing Director Jayden Jessup and Workshop Manager Mitchell Spencer.

And there’s a great story behind this photo.

Mitchell is himself a former ATNZ apprentice. Today, he’s Myriad’s Workshop Manager, helping develop the next generation of skilled tradespeople coming through the business.

Now Connor has reached that important milestone himself: qualified.

And the pipeline continues.

Myriad has taken on two new apprentices this year, continuing to invest in its people alongside its investment in advanced CNC machining technology, including the new machining centre pictured behind the team.

A former apprentice leading the workshop. A newly qualified tradesperson. And another generation coming through behind them.

Congratulations, Connor, on a fantastic achievement, and thanks to Jayden, Mitchell and the whole Myriad team for their continued commitment to apprenticeship training.

Wearing a welding helmet isn’t enough. It has to be ready to protect you.

A helmet can look fine and still have a problem. A damaged cover lens, incorrect settings, a faulty auto-darkening filter or the wrong shade can all compromise the protection it provides.

This month’s ATNZ Toolbox Talk is all about welding helmet safety and the checks to make before striking the arc.

✅ Check the shell, lenses and headgear
✅ Test auto-darkening filters
✅ Make sure grinding mode is off

A qualification earned, and a great career already taking shape.

Congratulations to Declan Lowies from Summit Hydraulic Solutions in Rotorua, who has completed his Fitting and Machining apprenticeship with ATNZ.

Declan has been an outstanding apprentice. He’s worked hard, applied himself throughout his training, and consistently impressed with his attitude and commitment.

Now all that effort has paid off. Declan is qualified and staying on with Summit to continue building his career as a tradesperson.

It’s a great outcome for Declan and for the team who have invested in his development from apprentice through to qualified tradesperson.

And that drive seems to extend well beyond work. Declan is also a keen runner and gym-goer, so he’s no stranger to setting a goal and putting in the work to reach it.

Congratulations, Declan — a fantastic achievement and very well deserved.

And well done to everyone at Summit Hydraulic Solutions who have supported him along the way.

The trade might run in the family, but this qualification is all Allan’s.

Congratulations to Allan Mathias from South Freeze in Christchurch, who has completed his Refrigeration and Air Conditioning apprenticeship with ATNZ.

Allan has followed his father into the refrigeration and air conditioning trade, and now he’s earned his own qualification.

It’s a great family connection, but completing an apprenticeship takes plenty of work in its own right. Years of learning on the job, building technical skills and putting them into practice have brought Allan to this moment.

Congratulations Allan, and well done to the team at South Freeze for supporting him along the way.

From completing his apprenticeship to Level 5 in just two years.

Michael Kocian from Perfect Air in Whitianga completed his apprenticeship in 2024.

Now, just two years later, he’s completed his Level 5 qualification too.

And Michael already had another trade under his belt. He’s also a qualified electrician.

That makes for an impressive combination of skills, but it’s the progression that makes this one worth celebrating. Michael became trade qualified and kept going, taking the next opportunity to develop his skills even further.

Congratulations, Michael, on another fantastic achievement!

And a big shout-out to the team at Perfect Air for continuing to support him along the way.

From teaching in New Zealand and South America to creating learning resources, Vanessa Ryburn’s career has always had learning at its heart.

Vanessa has joined ATNZ as our new Learning Designer, bringing nearly 10 years of education experience to the team.

She started her career as an ESOL teacher, working with learners here in New Zealand and in South America, before moving into learning resource development just over two years ago.

There, she discovered how much she enjoys creating content with the learner in mind.

“I really enjoy creating content for learners, and I hope I can be a positive team member and create engaging materials for all our learners.”

That combination of teaching experience and learning design will now go into the resources our learners use throughout their training.

Away from work, Vanessa is happiest staying active and getting outdoors with friends and family.

We’re looking forward to seeing Vanessa bring her educator’s perspective and creativity to ATNZ.

Already a qualified electrician. Now Ryan Kells has another trade qualification to his name.

Ryan, from Active Refrigeration in Palmerston North, has completed his New Zealand Certificate in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (Trade) (Level 4).

Taking on an apprenticeship when you're already qualified in another trade takes commitment. Ryan chose to keep learning, build on the skills he already had and develop expertise in another technical field.

Now all that work has paid off.

Qualified electrician. Qualified in refrigeration and air conditioning.

Congratulations, Ryan, on a fantastic achievement and a seriously useful combination of skills!

And a big congratulations to the team at Active Refrigeration for supporting Ryan through his apprenticeship.
