What does a Fire Resistance Rating actually tell you?

In building design, terms like fire rated, fire resistant and fire retardant can sound interchangeable, but the detail matters.

A Fire Resistance Rating, or FRR, measures how long a building element can maintain key performance criteria under fire conditions, including structural adequacy, integrity and insulation. For example, an FRR of 120/120/120 represents 120 minutes of performance across each of those three criteria.

Understanding how these ratings work is important when selecting passive fire systems and ensuring they’re appropriate for the specific application.

At Victoria University of Wellington’s School of Health, Potter Interior Systems’ Nacci Clip-In Timber Battens were used to create a bespoke curved feature wall that brings warmth, visual interest and acoustic control to the newly refurbished teaching floor.

The modular system enabled seamless curves and custom detailing, while its acoustic backing helps create a calmer, more welcoming environment for students and staff. Potter also supplied A Series 105 and DS Series aluminium partition systems to help complete the cohesive interior.
