I wanted to share a recent basement job in Auckland, because it's a great example of something I see often. This basement had clear signs of moisture movement — efflorescence, mould and dampness along the block work and wall-to-floor junctions. If left untreated, this kind of moisture keeps affecting finishes, air quality and how usable the space actually is.
Here's what I did on this one, a full internal negative-side waterproofing system:
✅ Removed unsuitable materials and protected the work area
✅ Mechanically prepared the concrete-block substrate
✅ Removed loose material, contaminants and surface residue
✅ Treated the critical wall-to-floor junctions and vulnerable details
✅ Applied the Ardex waterproofing membrane system across the walls
✅ Left a continuous, protective internal barrier ready for the next stage of renovation
To my fellow building practitioners: this is exactly why substrate prep and detailing matter so much. In my experience, a membrane is only as good as what's underneath it — it needs a sound, clean, properly prepared substrate, not damp or contaminated block work.
To homeowners: if you're noticing mould, white salt deposits or a persistent damp smell in your basement, don't ignore it. I always tell clients that the best results come from understanding the cause, the substrate condition and how the space will be used, all together, before any membrane goes on.
