Pouring the concrete slab for the foundation is a monumental stage when building a new home.

It’s also a mammoth effort from everyone, both in the lead up and on the day.

Needing work as a well oiled machine to pour and power float the entire slab before the concrete set, 8 concrete trucks were lined up to roll in one after the other from 6am.

When one of the truck’s barrels stopped turning, the boom pump company’s mechanic (who by pure coincidence happened to be working the hose that day, due to being short staffed) saved the day, somehow managing to get the bowl spinning enough to offload the concrete with a bit of know how and a construction screw. It’s safe to say he earned the player of the day award.

Placing the concrete, Rob Callaghan and his crew of concrete layers all brought their A game and finished things off perfectly as always.

The expertise and energy on site made the early morning start not only manageable but enjoyable, for a day that had begun at 4.30am and at a frosty 1.9 degrees.

It’s the relationships we’ve built along the years, and in these moments, with people like this, that truly help pull a project all together and why we only use other trades we know and trust to not only do a great job, but to put their heart and soul into the projects we bring them in on.

Pouring the concrete slab for the foundation is a monumental stage when building a new home.

It’s also a mammoth effort from everyone, both in the lead up and on the day.

Needing work as a well oiled machine to pour and power float the entire slab before the concrete set, 8 concrete trucks were lined up to roll in one after the other from 6am.

A very exiting stage for our new build project The Farmhouse - concrete pour day.

As it goes with building, there's a lot to align with site prep, other trades and weather.

With the concrete trucks and team to place it needing to be booked weeks in advance, the Cain Built crew hustled, putting in long hours and a lot of sweat to ensure everything on site would be ready.

Come tools down the night before, there was nothing else we could do but pray to the weather gods that the following day didn't bring rain, or it would be all over rover.

Running on fumes at 4.30am fielding phone calls, it began. Gates opened at 5am for the team, with the first concrete truck pulling in still in the dark at 6am.

The stars had aligned though and we couldn't have asked for better weather, be it unseasonably frosty conditions, with one of Auckland's coldest mornings - sitting at 1.9 degrees (real feel 0) on site, but what a beautiful scene it set.

It was quite the operation with 8 concrete trucks in total, at times lined up back to back, waiting patiently up the road. When one rolled out, the next pulled in.

Approximately 3 hours of boom pump action ticked by placing concrete for the foundation, which was then power floated to perfection by Rob Callaghan and his amazing crew on site, who brought their A game and great energy, making the early morning start manageable.

Pods have been placed for insulation and reinforcing mesh and bars tied off.

Beneath this, a layer of polythene for waterproofing, with all protruding pipes securely taped around.

Altogether we placed approximately 280 pods, with all offcuts and any unused pods being returned to be recycled by the supplier.

Pods have been placed for insulation and reinforcing mesh and bars tied off.

Beneath this, a layer of polythene for waterproofing, with all protruding pipes securely taped around.

Altogether we placed approximately 280 pods, with all offcuts and any unused pods being returned to be recycled by the supplier.

Wastewater pipes for The Farmhouse have been put to bed by our good mate Phil from Plumbing Wizards NZ.

The team have backfilled and compacted the trenches, protecting the pipes, with barrow after barrow of fine fill then compacted over the entire site.

In between, the guys were prepping the brick rebates, ready to be installed once the fines were sorted.

The team have backfilled and compacted the trenches, protecting the pipes, with barrow after barrow of fine fill then compacted over the entire site.

In between, the guys were prepping the brick rebates, ready to be installed once the fines were sorted.

Excavations have been dug for the under-slab plumbing and wastewater line that runs from the The Farmhouse to the septic tank location. The trench to carry the mains power cables also got cut in.

We’ve meticulously managed the heights and falls during this plumbing stage, to ensure the wastewater flows smoothly and doesn’t back up - which would be a major to correct later, never mind extremely unpleasant.

Once the plumber installs the pipes on their bedding we can proceed to backfill the trenches.

What is trench bedding? A supportive layer such as compacted sand or fine granular aggregate, placed beneath the pipe. This provides a stable foundation, preventing point-loading, structural deflection, or settling.

After backfilling, we’ll be ready to start the preparations for pouring the slab, moving one step closer to completing this phase of the project.

Shout out to NZ Machine HIRE for use of their hydraulic tipper. The guys appreciated not having to hand barrow tonnes of clay spoils off the pad.
