Bedroom rug โ€” same 600mm rule as dining, different room.

The rug extends 600mm past the two long sides and the foot of the bed. That gives you a soft landing under your feet when you get out of bed from either side. Queen bed? 240 ร— 330cm or 250 ร— 350cm rug. King? 290 ร— 390cm or 300 ร— 400cm.

Nightstands stay off the rug. They sit flat on the floor, with the rug ending just inside them. Running the rug under the nightstands wastes rug and makes the whole setup look smaller.

A tip we picked up from Shea McGee โ€” pull the rug further down toward the foot of the bed rather than centring it under the pillows. It makes the room look bigger.

Hamptons kitchens get a bad rap because most of them go too far.

Navy island, white perimeter, brass everything, shiplap walls, marble splashback to the ceiling โ€” by that point it's not Hamptons, it's a stage set.

This board is a Hampton restraint exercise. Navy as the only strong colour. White oak instead of painted white. White quartz, brushed nickel cup pulls. The Hampton vocabulary, used like punctuation rather than capital letters.

A North Shore client asked for "Hampton but not screaming." This is what we showed them.

Most childproofing checklists stop at the plastic clips.

Latches, gates, corner guards, anti-tip straps โ€” all worth doing, and you can sort the lot this weekend. But the safety that actually lasts is the safety that's built in. Hot water capped at 55ยฐC by a tempering valve, so a bumped mixer can't scald. Safety glass in low windows and doors. A balustrade a toddler can't climb or slip through. A pool fence that meets the code.

Some of that the Building Code already requires. Most families just don't know it's there to ask for, especially in older Auckland villas and bungalows that haven't been touched in decades. Pool barrier rules are property-specific and strictly enforced, so check yours with Auckland Council or an LBP.

Bathroom in our Albany modern renovation. The fittings sit against tile that was chosen for them, not the other way around. Vanity proportions sized for the room. Every junction matters.

Why some kitchens feel closed-in despite having tall ceilings โ€” and a dimension our team holds firm on at every kitchen design review:

Wall cabinets sit 450mm above the benchtop as standard. 600mm above the hob. That 450mm gap is the minimum for kettles, toasters, coffee machines, and stand mixers to sit on the bench and still be used.

Builders sometimes drop wall cabinets to 400mm to pack in more storage. It always feels cramped. Worth trading 50mm of cabinet for 50mm of headroom โ€” you use it every single day.

Higher gap (500โ€“600mm) looks more generous, but you start losing reach to the bottom shelf of the wall cabinet. 450mm is the proven compromise.

Most people picture project management as scheduling and spreadsheets. Jacob would tell you the actual job is translation: every group on a renovation speaks a different dialect, and someone has to make sure the meaning carries across the gaps. Done well, nobody notices the interpreter. Done badly, everyone does.
