Thirteen years ago, Cam started at Cake Commercial at just 17.

His dad was already part of the team and a legend in the tower painting world, but Cam still had to start from scratch. Coming straight out of school, he had a lot to learn, but he was always a hard worker.

Over time, he earned the respect of the crew and worked his way up from Tower Structure Maintainer to Site Supervisor and eventually Regional Operations Manager, leading our tower team across the lower north island.

Then, as it often does, life changed. When Cam and his partner started a family, life on the road was no longer the right fit.

Cam planned to leave towers and move home to Wellington, but we knew we did not want to lose him. Instead, we gave him the opportunity to lead our passive fire sector as a Regional Manager.

It was a completely new side of the business for Cam. He swapped the outdoors and tools for an office and a computer, helped build the region up, and made the role his own.

Then, six months ago, the opportunity came up to lead our entire tower sector, throughout the country.

For us, Cam was the natural choice. And he was pumped to get back to where it all began.

Today, Cam leads the Towers team and is one of just four people on CAKE’s senior leadership team reporting to the board.

From a 17-year-old starting from scratch to a leader helping shape the future of CAKE, it has been incredibly special to watch Cam’s journey and be a part of it. We’re proud to have you on the team, Cam.

Meet Cameron Willoughby, Sector Manager for our Towers team.

Cam joined CAKE at just 17, fresh out of school. His dad was already part of the team and a legend in the tower painting world, but Cam still had to start from scratch.

Over the next 13 years, he worked his way up from Tower Structure Maintainer to Site Supervisor, Regional Operations Manager and, eventually, Sector Manager.

It has been pretty special to watch Cam’s journey unfold. Keep an eye out for our next video, where he shares his story.

University of Auckland - Waipapa Taumata Rau Recreation and Wellness Centre | Auckland

Hawkins NZ engaged us to apply intumescent and protective coatings to the structural steel across the facility, fire-rating the steel to spec while maintaining a high level of finish in the trafficable areas.

Over a 30-month timeline, our team fire-rated more than 30,000m² of steel, using more than 20,000 litres of thin-film intumescent (Interchar 2060 and 2090) and close to 20,000kg of epoxy intumescent (Interchar 3120 and 212). The pool beams needed a tailored approach, with more than 8,000kg of Interchar 212 applied to protect the steel in one of the facility’s most visible spaces, without compromising the design

Carlaw Student Village | Parnell, Auckland

Our Protective Coatings team, led by Akeli, has recently been on site at Carlaw Park Student Village applying the intumescent, protective, and architectural coatings to the structural steel.

Working alongside Haydn & Rollett and Precinct Properties, our scope covers both the required fire protection and the final architectural finish, using Interchar 3120 direct-to-metal, followed by Interplus 1180 and topcoats of Interthane 870 / 990.

The Parnell development will include around 964 self-contained studios, making it the largest student accommodation facility in New Zealand, with completion targeted for the start of 2028.

We’ll be sharing more from this project soon, with our Upper North Island Regional Manager, Gerhard, breaking down our scope of work in an upcoming post.

Keeping the national grid protected is critical work, and it starts with the condition of the towers themselves.

We've recently been engaged by our long-standing client, Transpower, to complete infrastructure maintenance on ten transmission towers on the Huntly to Ōtāhuhu A-line, a project that demands specialist skill, purpose-built equipment and a strong focus on safety.

Take a look as Cam, our Tower Sector Manager, walks through the scope of work and how we've approached this project on site.
