On 29 April 2024, Tāiko Critical Minerals Limited (TCM) - then known as TiGa Minerals & Metals - was granted a resource consent to mine minerals and heavy metals on private farmland at the Barrytown Flats on the West Coast, New Zealand. TiGa Minerals & Metals (TiGa) has applied for a resource consent to mine and process minerals and heavy metals on private farmland at the Barrytown Flats, West C
oast, New Zealand. TiGa Minerals is owned by investors in New Zealand and Australia, including the original West Coast investors who initially proposed developing a mineral mine on the Barrytown Flats several years ago. The site is currently humped-and-hollowed dairy paddocks. The operation involves extracting mineral ore from just below the surface of the farmland, pumping the ore to a processing plant onsite, extracting heavy mineral concentrate, and returning the unwanted soils to the extraction area. Mining will progress in strips across the site, with a maximum of five hectares under active mining at any one time. As the mine progresses the land will be returned to its owner as improved agricultural pasture, enhanced by riparian fencing and planting and an additional wetland area that will be planted when the mine is completed. TiGa proposes extensive processes to prevent harm to the environment, water and wildlife; and to prevent or minimise disturbance to neighbours, and the community generally.
