Tāiko Critical Minerals Ltd

Tāiko Critical Minerals Ltd TiGa has applied for consents to mine minerals and heavy metals for ilmenite, garnet, zircon, gold and other minerals on privately owned farmland.

On 29 April 2024, Tāiko Critical Minerals Limited (TCM) - then known as TiGa Minerals & Metals - was granted a resource consent to mine minerals and heavy metals on private farmland at the Barrytown Flats on the West Coast, New Zealand. TiGa Minerals & Metals (TiGa) has applied for a resource consent to mine and process minerals and heavy metals on private farmland at the Barrytown Flats, West C

oast, New Zealand. TiGa Minerals is owned by investors in New Zealand and Australia, including the original West Coast investors who initially proposed developing a mineral mine on the Barrytown Flats several years ago. The site is currently humped-and-hollowed dairy paddocks. The operation involves extracting mineral ore from just below the surface of the farmland, pumping the ore to a processing plant onsite, extracting heavy mineral concentrate, and returning the unwanted soils to the extraction area. Mining will progress in strips across the site, with a maximum of five hectares under active mining at any one time. As the mine progresses the land will be returned to its owner as improved agricultural pasture, enhanced by riparian fencing and planting and an additional wetland area that will be planted when the mine is completed. TiGa proposes extensive processes to prevent harm to the environment, water and wildlife; and to prevent or minimise disturbance to neighbours, and the community generally. TiGa Minerals & Metals’ Barrytown Minerals Project is picking up pace since being granted resource consent for the first stage of its mine development late last year and being a listed project in the Fast Track Approvals Bill legislation for an extension of the mine area.
The company has commenced an extensive test drilling campaign to extend the mine life beyond 20 years, which will underpin its development and bring significant benefits to the West Coast.

TiGa Minerals and Metals is pleased to share that it has made significant progress in its plans to become a mineral sands producer on the West Coast of New Zealand.

Managing Director Robert Brand says the company continues to enjoy strong local community, iwi, local authority and central government support for its proposal to extract ilmenite, garnet, gold and zircon.

TiGa hosted its first meeting of the promised Community Liaison Group in December where an indicative progress timetable was shared: 2025 will be primarily planning, with a construction phase commencing early 2026 and mining itself in January 2027.

Robert Brand said that the company’s proposal to mine other sites in the same area has been included as a “Listed Project” in the fast-track legislation. TiGa has also applied for a Regional Infrastructure Loan at the invitation of the Kanoa Regional Economic Development and Investment Unit.

TiGa has welcomed the decision by independent commissioners to allow it to proceed with its proposed mine on the West Coast’s Barrytown Flats.

This will be a real boost for the local and regional economy which needs the economic strength that comes from diversification of industry and broadened employment opportunities.

TiGa carefully considered local issues and adapted our proposed operation to mitigate concerns raised throughout the process.

We look forward to continuing to work with the community going forward, which we will facilitate through our promised community liaison group. We thank you and the wider West Coast community for your involvement in the consent process.

The proposed mining site will have, at most, minor effects on the environment.

We will install substantial mitigation measures to reduce impact on the environment in terms of landscape and visual appearance, noise, traffic, indigenous flora and fauna, and water bodies.

There will be a net gain for the environment from our plans to create a new wetland and enhance the boundary planting along the existing wetland boundary, plus pest control and native vegetation planting on the screening bunds.
