Why is coffee chaff inside our Aqua Plant Protector?

We embed coffee silverskin/chaff inside a next‑generation biotechnology creating a bio‑composite that is strong in the paddock and designed to biodegrade in soil and water over time

The chaff acts as a lignocellulosic reinforcement, helping tune mechanical performance and processability while also providing an organic phase that microbes can readily digest at end‑of‑life.

For roasters, this turns a low‑value waste stream into a visible climate and biodiversity solution; for planters, it means robust protection today and no plastic legacy tomorrow.

This is circular design in action: we start with a problem material, and build a product around its strengths.

Tiny flakes, massive volume.

Coffee silverskin/chaff is only a small fraction of each bean by weight – typically around 2% of green or roasted coffee, depending on the process and variety.

New Zealand imports around 12,000 tonnes of coffee a year. That equates to approximately 240 tonnes of coffee silverskin/chaff.

When we talk about “waste to value” at PolyNatural, this is what we mean: taking streams like coffee chaff that already exist at scale and turning them into something that actively restores ecosystems. learn more at polynatural.nz

What actually is that ‘coffee silverskin’ we keep talking about?

Every green coffee bean has a thin, papery skin that clings to the seed inside the coffee cherry.

Roasters call it silverskin or chaff, and it flakes off during roasting, collecting in the chaff tray or cyclone as a very light, dry byproduct

Traditionally, chaff has been treated as waste and sent to landfill or burned, even though it’s a natural, lignocellulosic material rich in useful compounds like caffeine and polyphenols.

At PolyNatural, we see chaff differently: it’s not “waste”, it’s a circular ingredient.

At PolyNatural, our mission is to deliver solutions that protect both young plants and the environment. The upcoming Aqua Plant Protector Pack brings together three key elements for sustainable horticulture:

Aqua Plant Protector: Designed to biodegrade in both soil and aquatic environments, these plant guards have been independently tested for marine, water, and soil biodegradation. If they reach waterways, they break down naturally through microbial activity, leaving no harmful residue. Their expected lifespan is 1–2 years, making them a responsible choice for a wide range of planting projects.

Upcycled Coffee Silverskin: We repurpose coffee silverskin, a byproduct of coffee roasting into a valuable, high-performance resource. This approach supports a circular economy, reduces agricultural waste, and gives new life to materials that could otherwise go to landfill.

Pure NZ Wool W**d Mats : Our 100% pure New Zealand wool w**d mats offer a natural, biodegradable solution for w**d control.

We are proud to set a new standard for eco-friendly horticulture. Stay tuned for the official release of the Aqua Plant Protector Pack in our online store. https://polynatural.nz/collections/horticulture-products/products/aqua-plant-protector-pack
