🪜 STAIRS ARE STRUCTURAL TOO

Stairs are often treated as an architectural feature.

But they're also a structural system.

Cantilevered stairs, floating stairs and large stair openings can have significant structural implications.

The earlier the engineer is involved, the more options you have.

Don't wait until the stairs are fully designed to ask:

"How are we supporting this?"

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

When time matters, we get it done.

This project came with a very tight deadline, with the house sale depending on getting the engineering report completed quickly.

3-day turnaround from FIL Engineers to help keep the sale on track.

It’s always rewarding to receive feedback like this from a happy client.

Thank you, Jack, for your kind words and recommendation.

🔨 RENOVATION? THE OLD STRUCTURE MATTERS

That villa has been standing for 80 years.

But renovating it isn't the same as building new.

Existing foundations, timber framing, connections and seismic performance all influence what's possible, and what it will cost.

Before removing walls or adding floors, understand what the existing structure can and can't do.

Sometimes the old structure surprises you.
Sometimes it limits you.

Either way, knowing early is better than discovering it on site.

🔧 THE ENGINEER ISN'T THE LAST PERSON TO CALL

Too often, the structural engineer is the last person brought into a project.

The design is done. The client loves it. The budget is set.

And then the engineer is asked to make it work.

Sometimes that's fine.

But sometimes the design has structural implications that could have been avoided — or significantly simplified — with earlier input.

Bring the engineer in early.

Not to say no.

But to help you say yes — better.

The engineer's job isn't to approve your design. It's to help you build a better one.

🏗️ THE BEST BEAM IS SOMETIMES THE ONE YOU DON'T NEED

Architectural ceilings don't always need to be filled with beams.

If the structural grid, spans and load paths are considered early, floor joists, beams and supports can sometimes be arranged to work naturally with the architecture.

Good structural engineering isn't about adding more steel.

It's about using the right structure in the right place.

🪟 WINDOW SIZE CAN AFFECT YOUR STRUCTURE
Want larger windows?
Great.
But every large opening removes part of the wall that was helping carry the building.
Before increasing window sizes, consider:
• Lintel size
• Wall bracing
• Seismic resistance
• Connection details
• Foundation requirements
Sometimes moving a window 400mm can make the structural solution much simpler.
Small design changes can have big engineering consequences.

🧱 WALL ALIGNMENT = CHEAPER STRUCTURE

One of the simplest ways to make a building easier to engineer?

Line up your walls.

When walls, beams and supports stack vertically between floors, loads have a clear path to the foundations.

When everything moves around from floor to floor, you create transfer beams, transfer slabs and expensive structural solutions.

Before moving that wall 300mm for aesthetics, ask:

Where does the load go?

🏗️ Australia's Modular Construction Revolution Hits Full Throttle

A $220M manufacturing facility is set to break ground in Perth — backed by Wesfarmers ($100M equity), the National Reconstruction Fund ($120M loan), and the WA Government ($20M grant) — promising to produce more than 2,000 apartment

🏠 OPEN PLAN DOESN'T MEAN COLUMN-FREE

"Can we remove this column?"

Usually, yes.

But the question should be:

"What are we replacing it with?"
Removing one column may mean a much deeper beam, structural steel, larger foundations or a transfer structure.

Before removing every column from the plan, understand the cost of the alternative.
The cheapest structure is often the one that works with the architectural grid.
