The team at finesse Consulting would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Finesse Consulting will be closed from 4.00pm on Thursday 23rd December 2021 returning Monday 10th January 2022.

2021 has been a very busy year for Finesse Consulting, with the team continuing to grow, we have a new addition to the team of a Senior Structural Engineer, Lachlan Howat and next year we are moving to our own new premises, which fortunately isn’t too far as we move into the ground floor of 4/201 Opawa Road, Christchurch.

We wanted to take the time to thank you for all your support provided throughout this year and look forward to working with you in 2022.

Lachlan Howat has been on board with Finesse now for nearly two months now, and while it was a rocky start (two days before the most recent lockdown!) we have seen some great uptake of this extra capacity.

Being able to work alongside new and existing clients in the strengthening of light commercial buildings alongside repairs and new build designs for residential works.

If you are looking for a structural engineer for your project or would like another view or opinion then finesse would love to hear from you.

Lachlan has experience in the assessment, design and development of;

* Detailed Seismic Assessments (DSA) and repair schemes.
* Bespoke, architecturally designed homes.
* Heritage structures, including Unreinforced Masonry (URM).
* Medium rise, low damage construction.
* Structures in high wind environments, such as tropical cyclone zones.
* Minor to major structural building alterations.

In keeping with our service and demand, FCEL would also like to share some exciting news that we have appointed another senior structural engineer to join our team. FCEL’s senior structural engineer joins us in mid-August and brings with him a vast experience of working in the education, heritage properties, commercial and residential sectors while working for several large New Zealand consulting firms. This appointment will significantly increase our capacity and also improve our flexibility in meeting delivery deadlines. This is of particular importance in the current climate where we have seen a significant surge in workload since coming out of Covid lockdown last year.

Pushing the limits of investigation techniques

Since the Canterbury earthquakes, a number of innovations have been developed to assist engineers in obtaining better quality data regarding the condition of hard to reach structural elements.

The subfloor rover survey probably tops this list giving a reliable overview of foundation condition even when access is limited.
Typically this type of investigation has been used for reviewing subfloors in suspended timber frame dwellings, however, FCEL have collaborated with Cavity Critter - Subfloor and Roof Inspections on two recent projects to investigate the underside of concrete slab foundation supported off deep precast concrete piles. This is possible thanks to the ground dropping relative to the piled foundation by around 400mm. This previously unseen underslab area is akin to another world and this posed a number of challenges in avoiding losing contact with the remote vehicle.

Issues with signal transfer and unstable tailings all required careful planning in gaining a clear view of the overall condition of the piles and caps. The client was very happy as these additional investigations allowed a repair to be undertaken in lieu of what was initial expected to be a foundation rebuild.
