❄️Notes on Winter ❄️
If you live in a cold country (like NZ) it is tempting to want to chase summer around the globe. Winter is always tough, a bit gritty.
The landscape empties of growth, and goes to sleep. Nothing moves. The earth becomes bare, frosty, and sombre. Nights are dark.
Mornings are dark, and it feels like it will never end.
It is this feeling, this natural deep ‘rock-bottom’ place that winter drops us into that fascinates me. In western culture we don’t like to talk of ‘death’ however, winter always, and without fail, brings endings. These can be subtle, metaphoric, mental or emotional.
Whatever the nature of these endings are, a part of us sheds. Because these shifts happens under the umbrella of darkness, sometimes these changes are yet unknown, even to ourselves.
Without these deep nuggets of insight, this striking against the flint of your own soul, none of the other seasons make any sense.
Winter is like a steady foundation, from which everything else can flourish. I was born in the Spring and love the energy of the ‘Prima Vera’ above all else, however, I have gained a grudging appreciation of Winter, and wouldn’t miss it for the world.
