This New Brighton property had more going on than cosmetic cracking.

Uneven floors, structural movement, damaged brickwork and foundation settlement all pointed to deeper issues underneath the home.

The repair process involved:
• foundation repairs
• house re-levelling
• epoxy crack injection
• brick reinstatement
• and a full interior renovation once the structure was stabilised

In Canterbury homes, especially coastal and earthquake-affected properties, surface cracks are often just the visible symptom of movement underneath.

Fixing the cause properly is what protects the long-term safety and value of the home.

From scaffold to finished result.

Projects like this are a reminder that good building work is about more than just the final look. It’s about getting every stage right along the way.

Careful planning. Clear communication. Quality workmanship. Proper sign-off.

Whether it’s repairs, renovation work, or bringing a property back up to standard, the goal is always the same: a home that feels solid, safe, and built properly for the long term.

Most people have heard the word “relevelling”.

Almost nobody knows exactly what it means for their house.

In simple terms, it’s restoring a home’s floors or foundation back within acceptable tolerance after movement has occurred.

Most Canterbury homeowners first notice signs like:
• sticking doors
• sloping floors
• cracks appearing
• or building reports flagging floor levels

The process usually starts with an assessment, measurements, and a clear explanation of what’s actually happening.

And despite what people think, relevelling is often far less disruptive than expected.

Once completed properly, the house simply feels stable and level again.

Some movement in a Canterbury home is cosmetic.

Some points to larger foundation issues developing underneath the property.

The challenge is knowing which is which before it turns into:
• insurance complications
• failed building reports
• expensive structural repairs
• or buyers walking away mid-sale

With Canterbury’s soil conditions and earthquake history, gradual movement is more common than people realise.

If your home feels different than it did a few years ago, it’s worth getting it assessed properly.

Most people think foundation movement is an earthquake thing.

In Canterbury, it happens every year, no quake required.

Our clay soils shrink in a dry summer and swell again in winter. Do that on repeat for 20 or 30 years and your floors start to show it. Sticking doors. Sloping hallways. Tiles cracking along the grout lines.

It's not dramatic. It's gradual. And that's exactly why it gets ignored until it's expensive.

JAR Builders assess and repair foundation movement across Canterbury. If your house feels different than it did a few years ago, it probably is.

Listing your home? Get the floors sorted first.

If a building report has flagged floor levels out of MBIE guidelines, don't wait for a buyer to make it your problem.

A floor 50mm out of level can stop buyers getting insurance. No insurance means no deal.

We quote and repair relevelling jobs across Canterbury. Fast turnaround. Get a quote before you list.

Most Canterbury homeowners think floor level issues are a builder's problem.

They're also an insurance problem, and that part catches people off guard.

Insurers in New Zealand have access to EQC and NHC claim data. At renewal time, unresolved foundation issues on your property can result in exclusions, higher premiums, or cover being declined altogether.

A repair that's documented, compliant, and signed off by a Registered Master Builder doesn't just fix your floors. It changes how your property looks on paper.

That's a conversation worth having before your next renewal, not after.

That crack in your foundation isn't decorative.

Some are minor. Some are significant structural damage that EQC never picked up. Most Canterbury homeowners don't know which one they're dealing with until someone takes a proper look.

We assess what you have, explain your options, and fix it properly. Selling, buying, or just want it sorted. We've seen it all across Canterbury.

Registered Master Builders.

Think your earthquake repairs are actually finished?

A lot of Canterbury homes are still carrying incomplete EQC work. Scopes that were never fully completed. Repairs done incorrectly. Payouts that didn't cover the full job.

It's more common than people realise. And it doesn't fix itself.

JAR Builders work with EQC and NHC scopes, NHC repairs, and the On-Sold programme. If you're not sure where your property stands, call us.
