This is Richard Stalker’s 700 cow Fonterra dairy farm in Rangiora. The Solagri Energy system on Richards farm is a 58 kW array with a 128 kWh battery.
Stalker’s system is the first of its kind in New Zealand. It provides all of his dairy shed’s energy requirements and has not cost the farm any capital. Stalker’s only contribution is the one-quarter hectare of land that the array sits on, which .energy lease from him.

We are super excited to announce that New Zealand Green Investment Finance (NZGIF) is investing $10M in Solagri Energy This means that we will be able to finance around 120 solar arrays over the next three years, helping avoid 36,100 tonnes of CO2-emissions over the life of the assets.
NZGIF Chief Investment Officer Jason Patrick says the investment is an exciting step towards decarbonising New Zealand’s agricultural sector.
"Dairy farms require large amounts of energy to operate pumps, store and cool milk, and clean equipment, so energy costs make up a significant part of their overall budget. Solagri has a great solution to that challenge, offering farmers affordable renewable energy - capital free.
One of the exciting things about Solagri’s product is they install, own and maintain the solar arrays including insurance, cleaning and monitoring of the equipment, so there’s no upfront costs to the farmer."

Each Solagri system is sized specifically for the dairy shed it serves to ensure sufficient generation.

Because the systems are ground mounted, no building permit is required and Solagri takes care of every detail right down to fencing off the array for safety. A Solagri Energy system, (58 kW array and 128 kWh battery) has been installed on Richard Stalker’s 700-cow dairy farm near Rangiora at no cost to the farmer.

Stalker’s system, the first of its kind in New Zealand, provides all the dairy shed’s energy requirements and has not cost the farm any capital; Stalker’s only contribution is the one-quarter hectare of land that the array sits on.

The farm’s energy tariff is now substantially reduced and it is locked to inflation for the 20-year life of the system.
