Kia ora whānau,

Frances and Kaiah had the wonderful opportunity to visit Catherine Taiapa at Armatec Environmental Ltd in New Plymouth last week. It was a pleasure to learn more about the incredible work Armatec is doing and to finally connect in person.

A huge thank you to Catherine and the Armatec team for their warm hospitality. Our advisory team plays a vital role in our project, and the time spent brainstorming together is greatly appreciated as we continue to move forward.

Forget pots of gold... wool is the real treasure! Strong, sustainable, and naturally brilliant. Happy St. Patrick’s Day from WoolGadgetsNZ!šŸ€

The video shows some footage of our dyed wool being used in an ammonia gas-flow experiment in the lab. Almost an hour's worth of footage condensed down to 30 seconds!

We're painting the town green—not just for St. Patrick's Day, but for the planet.

Kia ora WoolGadgetsNZ whānau, Kaiah here!

I had the privilege of going to Ōtākou Marae today as part of the first-year Māori tauira (students) pōwhiri.

Our Māori Science Students' Association - Te Rōpū Pūtaiao (TRP), and Physical Education Māori Students' Association (PEMA) helped welcome our new Māori science tauira to Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka. Some of their exec members (and I) are pictured with the Vice-Chancellor, Grant Robertson.

What an awesome day meeting some of the new first-year cohort and basking in the beautiful weather at Ōtakou Marae! ā˜€

Kia ora WoolGadgetsNZ whānau! We have been holding off on introducing a very important person working behind the scenes on our project - say hello to Bella!

Bella (pictured on the left) has been working on our project as part of her studentship project in the Tan lab over the summer period. She has spent 10 weeks in the lab helping out with different dyeing conditions, measuring changes in dyed samples with acid and base treatments, and helping to plan with the next stages of the project. šŸ‘

Lisa (pictured on the right) and Tesoro (not pictured), have also been working in our lab on different summer studentship projects. They have helped us collect spectroscopy data on different wool samples - data we're still trying to understand. šŸ”¬

Our summer students have done a fantastic job helping out over the summer and learning new skills. Bella will be staying on in the Tan group as she starts her Honours year, however we will miss all her hard work within our WoolGadgets project!

Mauri tÅ«, mauri ora. Ngā mihi nui to our summer students! ā˜€šŸŽ‰

Our WoolGadgetsNZ team is excited to be working with Wisewool as part of our advisory board for this project! šŸ‘

Wisewool preserves the natural power of wool while propelling it into a new future. Their revolutionary machinery assembles wool fibres into two products: Wisewool Cloud and Wisewool Needle Punched Blanketing.

This innovative process enhances its resilience and bounce whist protecting the fibres unique, organic state. This means their high performing Wisewool products remain 100% natural, chemical free and retain the moisture-balancing and flame retardant properties of wool.

Through this intersection of science and nature, they have cultivated a versatile product range that lends itself to endless applications from clothing and furniture to bedding and beyond.

Our WoolGadgetsNZ team loves the incredible work that Wisewool are doing. If you're interested in Wisewool, follow them at Wisewool or visit their website at wisewool.co.nz

Kia ora WoolGadgetsNZ team! Happy Monday ā˜€

Another part of our project involves sharing our progress with our advisory board, which includes a few different New Zealand-based companies with similar goals aligned to our project vision. We will be highlighting some of the companies on our advisory board, whose insights help to guide our research.

Lanaco are a New Zealand based textile manufacturer of air filtration technology using sheep's wool. Their EcoStaticĀ® filter media combines both science and nature using electrostatic charge to create high-performance filters used across various applications, including air purifiers made for Unilever's Blueair. NASA has also used Lanaco's technology as critical emergency air protection systems to protect astronauts on the Artemis Orion spacecraft. šŸš€

Lanaco develops versatile products that deliver high performance while maintaining environmental integrity. ā™»ļø

If you're interested in learning more, follow them on social media at Lanaco or visit their website at lanaco.co.nz.

Our WoolGadgetsNZ team is excited to be working with Lanaco as part of our advisory board for this project!

Mōrena WoolGadgetsNZ team! Here is our final group member introduction!

Lastly we have Sara:

"My research primarily explores the use of vibrational spectroscopy and chemometrics for qualitative, quantitative and classification based analysis of a wide range of materials and systems.

Vibrational spectroscopic methods provide a molecular fingerprint of a samples composition and structure in a non-destructive manner. This molecular fingerprint can be probed with the aid of multivariate analysis methods to gain insight into the sample."

Sara has years of experience working in research within the Department of Chemistry here at the University of Otago, before transitioning to Flinders University in South Australia as a lecturer in analytical chemistry. Her expertise in spectroscopy is a key asset to our project.

We hope you've learnt a little more about us and our team over the last two weeks. Next up is our advisory board! šŸ‘€

Kia ora whānau! Another day, another group member introduction!

Today we have Raechel:

"As a university academic, my expertise is the structural properties and performance of textile fibres, fabrics, and finished textile products. The fibre type (e.g. wool, alpaca, polyester), processes and structures into which the fibres are further developed (e.g. sorting, cleaning; non-wovens, yarns, fabrics), and finishes (e.g. coloration), all have a potential effect on performance of finished products. Therefore, none can be ignored.

For this project, my primary contribution is industry-wide experience in application and engagement, especially in the wool sector."

We're excited to share more about WoolGadgetsNZ and the work we do! Keep an eye out for our final team member introduction coming soon... šŸ‘€
