We are excited to introduce the Taranaki Offshore Partnership Community Advisory Group. 🎉 🎉

This group brings together diverse expertise, interests and deep commitment to their communities across the region, ensuring a broad representation of voices in our offshore wind project.

🥳 Last week, we had the pleasure of kicking off our first meeting for 2025! A fantastic start to what we know will be a meaningful and collaborative journey.

At Taranaki Offshore Partnership, we deeply value community engagement. The Community Advisory Group serves as a vital link between our project and the wider community, helping us to reach those we might not otherwise connect with, ensuring that community aspirations are at the heart of our work. We look forward to working with this passionate group to shape a project that truly reflects the hopes and needs of the Taranaki community.

We’re looking for passionate volunteers from across Patea, Hawera, Waverley, Stratford, Ōpunake, Eltham, Manaia, Whanganui, and New Plymouth to join our Community Advisory Group! This is a great opportunity to represent your community and be a key voice in the development of offshore wind in Taranaki.

As a member of the group, you'll help us understand local perspectives and ensure your community’s views are heard and incorporated by our project development team.🤝

Join us on Monday, October 7th for our next community information session in Hāwera “Lightbulb moment: why is electricity so expensive?”

We’ll be discussing how the electricity market works and the factors that determine the cost of your electricity bill. Learn about the key drivers like generation, transmission, supply and demand that influence the price you pay and discover how offshore wind could be part of the solution to a more affordable and sustainable energy future.

The session will be holding at our Hāwera office, 18 Union Street, starting at 5.30pm. Everyone is welcome, and we’d love to see you there!

New Zealand currently has 21 onshore wind farms that generate 1.2 GW of electricity all over the country!

Just one offshore wind farm in the South Taranaki Bight could produce up to 1 GW of electricity by itself, helping to provide the scale of electricity that we’ll need in the future.

We had a fantastic time at our recent community information evening, discussing "What’s Next? Update on the Offshore Wind Project and Next Steps." It was a great opportunity to share the latest on our offshore wind project, answer questions, and outline the road ahead.

Electricity is one form of energy used in New Zealand. Even though 80% of New Zealand’s electricity is from renewable sources, just 40% of all energy used is renewable, because of our reliance on fossil fuels in industries such as transport and industrial heat, e.g. coal boilers in factories.

As a country, we need a lot more renewable energy to meet growing demand for electricity so we can build a more sustainable future.

Last Friday, it was a pleasure to come together with local partners and members of Ngāti Ruanui in New Plymouth for a blessing before we deployed three underwater microphones. The equipment, which will be in the South Taranaki Bight for a year, will monitor the presence of marine mammals in the area, including their migration and feeding patterns. By gaining insights into the behaviour of marine mammals, we’ll be able to ensure appropriate protections are in place for the sea mammals if our proposed offshore wind farm goes ahead.

We were delighted to work with local Taranaki suppliers to build key components of the underwater microphones, as well as Taranaki-based vessels and crew to deploy them. It demonstrates the opportunities for the Taranaki region, even before offshore wind becomes a reality.

Yesterday, our Hāwera-based team member, Jess, had the pleasure of visiting Normanby School to talk to students about all things offshore wind!

It was great to see so many students engaged with how offshore wind can provide renewable energy for New Zealand and the opportunity for Taranaki to lead the way in this exciting new industry.

We loved the feedback from one student, who said “this presentation blew my mind!”

Music, food and conversation are at the heart of Taranaki Offshore Partnership Taste the World – it’s full of live performances, compelling stories and cultural insights.

If you’re heading to WOMAD 2024, make sure you check out Taste the World, and pop down to the Taranaki Offshore Partnership tent where we’ll be chatting to members of the public about all things offshore wind, and enjoying some fun lawn games!

At our final public information session in 2023, the New Zealand Super Fund talked about why they're so interested in investing in offshore wind on behalf of all New Zealanders.

Members of local iwi, who recently travelled overseas to study offshore wind farms in Europe, also shared some interesting insights regarding what's needed to make the development of an offshore wind industry here a reality.
