Remember the polystyrene snowstorm we shared back in March?
At the time, we couldn't tell you what we were making. Now we finally can.
Well, this is what all that polystyrene turned into... 🦈
We were approached by Hazmat Productions, an American film production company working on a project for Discovery Channel's Shark Week 2026.
Hazmat supplied us with the 3D CAD model and our job was to turn that digital model into a full sized physical shark, approximately 4 metres long.
Using our CNC router, we machined the shark from large blocks of polystyrene in multiple sections. Those sections were then glued and assembled in our Invercargill workshop to create the complete shark form.
From there, it was handed back to the team at Hazmat Productions, who took care of the next stages of the build, completing the fit out to turn it into a fully functioning semi submersible shark decoy.
The final touch was a highly detailed 3D wrap applied by a specialist signwriting company, transforming the fibreglass shell into a very convincing great white.
It is not every day a 4 metre shark comes out of the Fi workshop, and it is pretty cool to finally be able to share where this one ended up.
