Winter came early at Fi this week. ❄️

Let it snow. Let it snow. Let it snow.

A recent project for the film industry had us cutting mountains of polystyrene and turning the workshop into a full scale snowstorm.

We cannot say what it is for yet, but it is a great example of how fabrication and creative industries are starting to cross paths more and more.

Stay tuned once we are allowed to show the final result.

And that’s a wrap for 2025.

From slides to giant jaffas to boats to caravans to campervans to fibreglass sharks and fibreglass dogs, it’s been one hell of a year.

Big builds, small builds and a few “how did we end up making that” moments in between.

Massive thanks to our team, our clients and everyone who trusted us with their ideas this year. We genuinely love the variety and the challenge that comes with it.

Time to down tools, recharge and get ready to do it all again in 2026.

✨ And that’s a wrap for the Southland Business Awards 2025, what a night!
So many talented businesses came together to celebrate excellence across our region.

Fi Innovations was proud and honoured to create the prestigious trophies for this year’s awards. Each piece carries deep meaning, and we wanted to share a little of that story with you:

🏆 Reece McDonald Trophy
This special trophy was designed to honour Reece and his incredible contribution to our community.

The curved lines show an aerial view of the Chopper Bike Ride route, repeated 47 times to represent Reece’s age at the time of his passing.

The base represents both a helicopter’s rotor and a bicycle’s spoked wheel in motion.

The surrounding topography reflects every hill climb and challenge riders endure, but also the land and community that have benefited from Reece’s dedication.

Its large scale symbolises Reece’s big heart and larger-than-life personality.

🏆 Southland Business Awards Trophies 2025
As past winners, we know how special these awards are, and we wanted to deliver something truly worthy.

The design incorporates three key elements:

Weave pattern: The Three Baskets of Knowledge from Māori mythology, Te Kete Tuauri, Te Kete Aronui and Te Kete Tuatea.

Circular form: Continuous improvement and sustainable growth across generations.

Repeating details: The work ethic and daily effort that drive business success.

Every part of these trophies was proudly designed and manufactured in-house and led by Derek Manson.
Printing was done on our 3D Systems Corporation ProX 800 using crystal clear Accura ClearVue (SLA)

🎉 Sweet reveal! 🎉

The Fi Innovations crew has had an absolute blast helping bring Joc O’Donnell’s sugary vision to life at Toot Sweets. From the 6-metre-wide Giant Jaffa you can walk through, to the jet-plane lollies soaring overhead, the rainbow gummy-bear selfie wall, and those interactive “Sniff the Smell” noses, this place is pure kid-in-a-candy-store magic!

Our slice of the project 🍬

🔴 1 × Giant Jaffa — believed to be the largest on the planet, hand-laid fibreglass shell

✈️ 10 × suspended Jet-Plane lollies — 1.5 m long, lightweight fibreglass

🐻 54 × gummy bears — crystal-clear, tinted-resin castings for the photo wall

👃 5 × 600 mm 3D-printed noses for the interactive scent station

There were many other talented contractors who also helped realise this vision, and an extra-big shout-out to Joc and the whole Toot Sweets team for trusting us with the fun stuff.
