One of the simplest workshop hacks we've come across.

If you've ever used a nibbler, you'll know it leaves thousands of tiny razor-sharp bits of steel everywhere.

Andrew's solution?

A plastic bottle screwed onto the bottom to catch them as you cut.

Less mess, less cleanup, and a lot less chance of finding one in your boot, tyre, or the dog's paw later.

Simple. Cheap. Effective.

Step 4: Prep & Paint

Well... we didn't quite make the 4pm finish time 😅

Missed it by about three hours.

But we did get a fair bit knocked over.

Andrew finished welding up the angle brackets, then it was my turn. Wire brushing the welds, cleaning everything down with solvent, and getting it ready for paint.

Once that was done, all the welds got coated with a zinc-rich paint to help protect against rust and give it the best chance of standing the test of time.

It's one of those jobs where every step takes longer than you think, but we're happy with the progress.

We might not have got the afternoon off we were hoping for... but maybe tomorrow.

On the bright side, we did kick the day off with a sauna and breakfast at Ahipara with the crew from The Sauna Project, so we are happy 👌

You might be wondering what’s got Andrew tearing his hair out 😅

While everyone sees the beams, doors, stairs, and workshop chaos… there’s been some seriously big days and nights happening in the office lately too.

Quotes, schedules, problem solving, planning, supplier calls, paperwork, pricing, emails, and trying to keep everything moving.

So shout out to Andrew, Krista, and Rob for the mahi going on behind the scenes to keep the wheels turning.

The workshop might be loud… but the office has been going just as hard lately.

Celebrating a bloody hardworking team this week.

The work has been coming through the doors thick and fast, and heading back out just as quickly because of the crew in the workshop and on site.

Everyone’s been going hard.

You take a step back, look around, and see all your workmates putting in the same effort beside you. That’s a pretty good feeling.

We celebrated with a Barbie yesterday and took a moment to appreciate the push.

Big thank you to our customers for the work you’re putting through us. We really do appreciate it.

It wasn’t that long ago we were scratching around like chickens trying to find work.

Proud of the team. Grateful for the work.

Hope everyone has a safe long weekend out there.

Now that I’ve finally remembered David’s name… 😅

Had a really good yarn with him when he stopped in the other day.

He mentioned he’s been following our Facebook posts for the last six months or so and said he’s learned a lot more about what we actually do as a business.

For him, doors were probably the main area he associated us with, but through the posts he’s since realised how much else goes on here too. Glulam, stairs, shelving, building, and everything in between.

To be honest, that’s kind of the whole reason we started doing these posts in the first place.

Just trying to help people understand what we do, get it out into the community, and teach a few things along the way too.

So hopefully other reps, customers, and followers are finding the content useful as well.

And if there’s ever anything you’d like to see more of or learn about, let us know 👌

Also… still working on un-training my brain from calling him Alan.

28/05/2026

Well… that was a bit embarrassing 😅

Note to self: before capturing some nice words from your sales rep on camera… make sure you actually get their bloody name right.

Sorry David, I actually have known you for years. But for some reason, ever since I first met you, I’ve wanted to call you Alan. Every time I’ve seen you since I’ve had to remind myself:
“Remember… it’s not Alan. It’s David.”

Clearly that strategy isn’t working.

Safe to say the workmates aren’t letting me live this one down anytime soon 😂

Awesome little morning last week at the Kaitaia Business Association breakfast hosted at Peekaboo Backyard Eatery.

Really good seeing local business owners getting together, networking, sharing ideas, and talking openly about what’s happening in their businesses and industries.

Big thanks to the KBA, NorthChamber, MSD Te Tai Tokerau, NorthlandNZ, Peekaboo, ChamberWorks, and all the speakers and organisers involved. Great turnout and some really valuable conversations.

You’ll spot in one of the photos that I volunteered Andrew to get up and talk about some of the AI systems he’s been building for the business at the moment 😅

He’s basically creating a “brain” for the company through Claude to help capture knowledge, systems, and information across the business… but he’s a bit too shy to volunteer himself, so I helped him out there.

Awesome event and definitely encourage other business owners around the Far North to get involved with the KBA and get along to these sorts of events.

Big day today for Lenita and the Kaitaia Volunteer Fire Brigade team as they take on the Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge in Auckland.

Carrying 25kg of gear and wearing full breathing apparatus, they’ll climb 1103 stairs, up 51 flights and 328m vertically, all to raise money for Blood Cancer New Zealand.

Lenita, we’re all incredibly proud of you. You’re an awesome part of our team and we know you’ll give it everything you’ve got.

Also wishing John, Josh, Mel, and Tay all the very best. Good on all of you for the fundraising and effort that’s gone into supporting such an important cause.

If anyone would still like to donate, here’s the link:

On Wednesday we had to say goodbye to Skids.

The animals up here are a big part of our days. They’re there for every smoko, every lunchtime, every pat, and somehow always know where the food is.

Skids was very well loved by all of us and it was pretty tough saying goodbye.

Big thanks to the vets for coming up to the workshop, and to all the crew who stayed behind afterwards to help dig his resting place and send him off peacefully.

Also a big thank you to all our customers, friends, and family who showed Skids love over the years.

We'll all miss you Skids ❤️
