We found this comment on NZ builders. A person was asking for advice about options for building an economical home and thought it was quality information to share to people considering building or renovating...

- A lot of builders don’t like kit sets.
Because unless they are well refined they are more trouble than they are worth.

- Most group homes companies will promise you the world. And seem cheap. The people actually doing the work will be over worked and under paid. Meaning they sometimes rush, and this can mean the quality drops.

- Smaller Design and build teams are great. They tend to take more pride in what they do and sometimes can be more flexible with what you want. As they’re not locked into a modular design system.

- Custom home builders will give you the best quality possible. And they specialise in doing out of the box things all the time.
But they will be the most expensive a lot of the time.
Because they are worth it.

Clients always ask how they can save money.
My tips are.
- Stay away from the magazines. The name brand cladding you see in a magazine is expensive.
There’s nothing wrong with the basics. - brick, pine bevelback, pine/cedar/even abodo/ lunawood shiplap etc.
They are proven. They are readily available.
- Don’t be fooled by a product that is cheap off the shelf. As it may be slow/ or harder to install.
For example, Hardies linea weatherboard. May be cheap off the shelf. But it’ll end up costing you more in the long run.
-nothing wrong with a mono pitch roof. Or simple hip/or gable ends.
Keep the footprint simple. And the roof simple.
- corners are expensive.
A rectangle building with only four corners is cheaper than a building with a bunch of alcoves, and outcrops. So be conscious, corners =$$
-not all builders are out to screw you. More time you spend onsite the more time they spend with you than swinging a hammer.
- If you want to help, come in and sweep/pickup rubbish after hours. Not while we are working.
- a scullery is another kitchen. So cost of a kitchen *2.
- bedrooms are cheap. Bathrooms are not.

Make your Wishlist, Before you go to the builder.
Make your final decisions as early as you can. And don’t change them after it’s been locked in. (Unless you really stuffed up)
Builders can often get better rates on appliances and fittings. Trust them.

-Building isn’t cheap.
-It’s stressful.
-And you’ll be glad when it’s done.
- but it’s worth it.

Kustom build have been hand selected by passive house designers "E-haus" to build this one of a kind home located in the Far North. It's a absolute privilege as a carpenter to be working on a house like this! I know there wont be any complaints with office views like this.

Second Kustom Build spec home in Ahipara up to exterior painting and gibbing inside. It's a 4 bedroom, double internal garage, 2 bathrooms and open plan kitchen/dining/lounge with some amazing outdoor spaces.

Looking for tidy tenants for this in a few months time so follow our page and keep in touch if you know anyone.
