Pleased to be part of this significant project at Mangamuka Gorge, providing scaffolding and safe working platforms to assist in the works required to reopen the highway.
Mangamuka Gorge update: Roadworkers are continuing to make great progress on State Highway 1 through Mangamuka Gorge in Northland—check out these scenes from four different sites across the project. With us having a much drier autumn than last year, the project team is working around the clock to complete as much as possible before winter sets in.
The top left photo is from the night shift on slip A6 where the night team is drilling the permanent piles in advance of the day team doing their work. The day team manages the reinforcing cage placement, tremmie pipe installation, concrete pours, and installation of the steel lagging plates between the piles—this work transfers the weight of the retained soil across the piles, stabilising the slope.
The top right photo is from slip A26 where workers are installing universal column beams. These beams are H-shaped galvanized steel columns the precast concrete retaining panels will slot into to form the wall.
The bottom left photo is from slip A11 where workers are carefully clearing the site of vegetation and relocating any wildlife that they find.
The bottom right photo is from slip A12 where all 38 piles have been installed and the anchor drilling team are currently doing their work. They're managing their work carefully because the anchors they're installing are going in between piles already installed on slip A27 close by.
Across the entire project, workers have installed all 747 enabling piles and 317 out of 561 permanent piles.
We expect SH1 through Mangamuka Gorge to reopen by Christmas this year. You can keep up to date with our work on Mangamuka Gorge by signing up to our email newsletter. Visit our website to sign up, and to find out more about the project: https://nzta.govt.nz/sh1-mangamuka-gorge-slip-repairs/
