Unsung heroes of innovation

At AgResearch, science meets reality thanks to the brilliant minds in our engineering workshop. These behind-the-scenes champions turn ideas into machines, helping us bring cutting-edge agritech to life.

One of our own, Mos Sharifi, was recently featured by Engineering New Zealand for his incredible work in digital and precision agriculture — including leading the development of Clarospec™, a game-changing technology for meat quality assessment.

This recognition is a well-deserved bouquet for Mos and the entire engineering team who quietly power our breakthroughs.

We were honoured to host the team from Tairāwhiti Whenua Charitable Trust at our Lincoln campus this week, including their newly appointed CEO Hilton Collier – a long-time friend of Bioeconomy Science Institute and a respected leader in Māori agribusiness.
Hilton was joined by a passionate rōpū of Governors, Farm Managers, and Shepherds, alongside members of the Beef + Lamb New Zealand extension team, all keen to learn more about the work of the Bioeconomy Science Institute and our Lincoln University colleagues.

As part of the visit, we invited a group of shepherds into one of our laboratories to roll up their sleeves alongside Dr Nicole Schon, diving into visual soil assessment and exploring the science that supports sustainable land management. It was hands-on, collaborative, and deeply connected to the kaupapa of unlocking the potential of whenua Māori.

Tairāwhiti Whenua represents the largest network of Māori landowners in Aotearoa, advocating for local solutions and empowering kaitiaki to steward their whenua and taiao with integrity and innovation.
Ngā mihi nui to Hilton, the Tairāwhiti Whenua team, and our colleagues from Beef + Lamb New Zealand for bringing your energy, insights, and commitment to the future of whenua Māori. We look forward to continuing this journey together.
