Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research Group

Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research Group We are New Zealand's Crown Research Institute (CRI) for our land environment. Those decisions have become more complex.

From 1 July 2025, Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research is a group of the Bioeconomy Science Institute
Science for Our Land and Our Future
Ko te pūtaiao mō tō tātou whenua, mō āpōpō We conduct science and research focused on environmental issues, opportunities, and solutions, and through partnering with users we aim to create value for Aotearoa New Zealand (AoNZ). We work alongside people (our partne

rs) with whom we can make a difference, in:

• central and local government
• Māori iwi, hapū, and other entities
• the food and fibre sector and other businesses
• the global research and science community
• community groups and individuals. At a time when global society is navigating climate change, losses of critical biodiversity and habitat, and great societal and technological change, people are central. Whatever one’s role in society or the economy, the decisions we make now will determine what we experience and pass on to future generations. People’s needs have grown for knowledge to understand the issues, and tools to provide the capability, and confidence based on trust, to address them. Manaaki Whenua’s role over 30 years has been to meet those needs. At our seven sites we also curate almost a third of New Zealand’s Nationally Significant Databases and Collections – reference collections of biological material, cultural knowledge, online databases and tools. These resources are used by our scientists and others across New Zealand and around the world.

It's that time of year again, when autumn brings out so many of our special fungi. Have a look through these and vote for your favourite!

And don't forget - Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research Group is now part of the Bioeconomy Science Institute. Come over and follow us there.

Fungi are a very large and often overlooked part of Aotearoa’s unique biodiversity, coming in fascinating shapes, colours and forms. Did you know that AoNZ is the only country in the world to have fungus on its banknotes?

Researchers from Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research Group , now part of the Bioeconomy Science Institute, have been working with Department of Conservation to better-understand the threats to koekoeā (long-tailed cuckoo), to reverse their decline, and we are on the lookout for accidentally killed specimens!

Koekoeā have an unfortunate habit of flying into windows, especially when they are on migration in spring and autumn, meaning they are often found dead or injured near buildings almost anywhere in New Zealand. Samples from these birds are a valuable contribution to our research – we only need a small amount of tissue, and the rest of the specimen will be made available to iwi or museums.

𝗜𝗻𝗷𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗸𝗼𝗲𝗸𝗼𝗲𝗮̄

If you find an injured koekoeā, please phone 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468), or contact your nearest DOC office or native bird rescue. Then, please let us know too so we can liaise with them.

𝗙𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗹𝘆-𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗸𝗼𝗲𝗸𝗼𝗲𝗮̄

If you find a freshly-dead koekoeā, please put it in a plastic bag, freeze it, and contact Neil Fitzgerald [email protected] as soon as possible.

Diversifying whenua Māori (Māori land) may appear simple - but is it? What social, cultural and historical factors can impede transitioning towards more diverse whenua Māori?

The 𝘏𝘦 𝘕𝘨𝘢𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦, 𝘏𝘦 𝘒𝘰𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘢𝘪 project focuses on resilient landscapes on highly erosion-prone whenua Māori (Māori land) for future generations. Post-pine-harvest regenerating native forest 🌳 is vital in protecting this land, and researchers are working to build a holistic restoration framework with mana whenua.

There's a Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligation on the part of agencies and institutions, including local and central government, to include mana whenua as genuine partners in any climate change adaptation approach, plan or policy. Kaihautū Māori Research Impact Leader Dr Shaun Awatere leads a team of researchers developing tools that support Māori communities make more informed climate adaptation decisions through a te ao Māori lens.

The amount of CO2 in the atmosphere continues to rise far above pre-industrial concentrations - and we've been working since the 1990s to quantify the effects of this rise on plant growth 🌱

For the last 6 years, we've been benchmark sampling soil organic carbon at 500 sites across New Zealand, and are now pleased to report that the full results of the benchmark sampling are in!

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is the basis of the soil food web 🌱 and plays an important role in maintaining soil structure, retaining water and nutrient cycling. Soils are also large reservoirs of carbon, and globally contain more carbon than the atmosphere and vegetation combined. A small increase or decrease could have significant impacts on carbon footprints at farm, industry and national scales.
