Project Highlight: Simpson Grierson

Completed in 2023, the Simpson Grierson fitout in Wellington City was designed to create more than a premium office environment.

For a leading commercial law firm, the space needed to feel polished, calm and highly thoughtful from the moment clients arrive.

The suspended ceilings played a major role in achieving this. Across the reception, meeting rooms, and lounge spaces, the suspended ceilings helped to create a premium first impression, support acoustic control and define zones in the building without relying on heavy walls or closed-off spaces.

The result is a workplace that is refine, functional and welcoming, with ceiling details that support the look and performance of the interior.

The project went on to win the $100-$500K Category at the AWCI award in 2024.

When do we use metal vs timber in ceilings and partitions?

Metal systems are built for performance. They’re consistent, and non-combustible, making them ideal for commercial spaces where fire ratings, acoustics, and precision matter most.

Timber systems bring a different strength. They’re natural, adaptable, and renewable, with strong sustainability credentials. In the right applications, timber can also achieve excellent fire performance through design.

Projects like Ngā Mokopuna - The Living Pā show just how far timber can go when sustainability is front of mind.

This project meant a great deal to our team.

Recently, NZ Ceilings & Interiors supplied and installed acoustic panels in the Children's Cancer Service at Te Wao Nui, Wellington Regional Hospital.

The open design of the space is bright and welcoming but during busy times, noise levels build for patients, family and staff. The new acoustic panels help to create a quieter, calmer environment for care and time spent together.

A huge thank you to Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora for the care they provide every day, and also to T&R Interior Systems for generously providing the acoustic panels for this project.

Grateful to have played a little part in making the space comfortable for the children, families and staff who spend their time there.

Turning down the volume, turning up the care 💙

Walking into the Children’s Cancer Service at Te Wao Nui feels a little calmer this week. While we love the spacious design of our new hospital, the "hustle and bustle" of a busy ward can sometimes be overwhelming for our brave patients and their whānau.

Enter the Lepper family. While their daughter undergoes treatment for leukaemia, Nathan and his team at NZ Ceilings & Interiors decided to give back in a big way. They donated, supplied, and installed professional acoustic panels across the entire ceiling – a gift worth thousands of dollars!

"We noticed how quickly the space could become loud and overwhelming," says Nathan. "It’s a small contribution, but one we hope makes a real difference."

And it certainly has! Our nurses and families are already feeling the benefits of a quieter, more focused environment.

A massive thank you to Nathan, his family, and the NZ Ceilings & Interiors team for their incredible kindness and hard work. 🏠✨

Work in progress at Animates.

Steel stud partitioning is underway, forming the structure for the new layout.

We’ll be installing plasterboard linings, completing plastering, and reinstating the ceiling tiles to bring the space back together.

A good example of how these systems come together behind the scenes to shape a functional fit-out.

This fitout is also a good example of modifying an existing layout to be more practical without committing to an expensive full scale fitout.

We’re proud to showcase our work on the Greenwood Roche fit-out, where acoustic performance played a key role in shaping the space.

Open-plan offices encourage collaboration, but they also introduce noise. This project required a considered approach to ensure the space performed as well as it looked.

Multiple ceiling systems were used throughout, including acoustic grid ceilings over work areas and bespoke acoustic feature panels in shared spaces. Each system worked together to control sound while maintaining a clean and unique architectural finish.

The result is a workspace that looks sharp and performs exactly as it should.

Why aluminium for our WIP in Lower Hutt?

In partitioning and suspended ceiling systems, aluminium is often the go-to for a reason.

It’s lightweight, making installation faster and more efficient. It’s durable and corrosion-resistant, so it performs long-term without warping or degrading.

And it offers flexibility, allowing systems to be adapted, reconfigured, and integrated with glazing, services and finishes.

It’s not just about how it looks. It’s about choosing materials that make the entire system work better.

We’re currently on site delivering this project in Lower Hutt, focused on aluminium partitioning and suspended ceiling systems.

Partition framing and glazing are taking shape, with the ceiling grid above forming the base for lighting and services. Aluminium systems allow for fast installation, durability, and flexibility as the space evolves.

With glass going in and finishes approaching, the space is starting to come together.

Did you know? Suspended ceilings go back over 600 years. 🏯

Early examples appeared in 14th century Japan, where timber ceilings were introduced beneath exposed roof structures to hide rafters or refine the space.

In interiors like this, the roof structure sits above, while a lower ceiling creates a more human-scale environment, especially from a seated viewpoint.

Early Japanese temples didn’t use suspended ceilings for services. They used them to shape space, hide structure, and create atmosphere.

The function has evolved. The idea hasn’t.

We’re currently on site in Petone delivering a project that has our team constructing a timber mezzanine and sub-floor, alongside the direct fix ceiling systems.

These steel grids to the underside of the Mezzanine are directly fixed with clips from the structure above and provide the backbone for plasterboard linings, lights and other services.

Our timber framing and ceiling grid will ensure the structure and finishes align seamlessly before the next stages of the fit-out.
