We recently had two vehicles in the workshop, both come in with a complaint of intermittent white smoke 💨 from the exhaust. Here’s what we found:

🚙 Vehicle 1: Melted DPF

This vehicle came in with intermittent white smoke and occasional performance drops. After diagnosing, we discovered the cause: a melted DPF.

When a DPF becomes heavily restricted and regeneration isn’t working properly, exhaust gas temperatures can rise too high, causing the internal core to overheat and melt. This leads to:
⚠️ White smoke from the exhaust
⚠️ Strong exhaust smell
⚠️ Poor performance
⚠️ Increased fuel consumption

🚙 Vehicle 2: Cracked DPF

The other vehicle also came in with intermittent white smoke . Upon inspection, we found that the DPF core had cracked due to extreme heat. This caused white smoke, along with:
⚠️ Exhaust inconsistency
⚠️ Reduced performance
⚠️ Increased fuel consumption

Have you ever wondered where our Caltex oil comes from?

Most of our Caltex lubricants come directly from Caltex’s regional manufacturing plant in Thailand to us, and we then distribute them across the Lower North Island. On average, this size container holds about 17,000L of genuine Caltex oil, which is stored between our Petone and Masterton branches before it reaches you.

We also stock products made in Belgium, the USA and the UK. These come to us via the Caltex distribution centre in Auckland. This also lets us source extra product when demand is high, so you always have the oil you need.

If you have questions about the oil you’re using – or what you should be using – we’re always happy to help.
