HERA was on the ground in Sydney last month for the Advanced Manufacturing Readiness Facility (AMRF) visit and the conference (ACM CRC Annual Partner Meeting).

Alan (HERA CEO) and Michail (HERA GM Fabrication 4.0) saw firsthand the progress being made across the programme and the value of industry and research working together.

Born in 1955 in the remote farming community of Pōrangahau in southern Hawke’s Bay, Dr Charles Clifton’s path to becoming one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most influential structural engineers was anything but conventional.

Growing up on a farm, his curiosity for how things worked showed itself early. Whether it was experimenting with makeshift engineering projects or asking questions about electricity and construction, the groundwork for Charles' career was being laid.

Those formative experiences sparked a lifelong fascination with engineering and problem-solving. After studying civil engineering at the University of Canterbury in the 1970s, Charles began a career that would ultimately reshape the way steel is used in Aotearoa New Zealand buildings and influence structural engineering practices internationally.

Between 1983 and the mid-2000s, structural steel's market share in New Zealand's multi-storey buildings grew from virtually zero to over 50 per cent.

That did not happen by chance.

In the latest episode of Stirring the Pot, Humans of Steel edition, we sit down with Professor Charles Clifton, who started HERA's structural division in 1983 and spent the next four decades rebuilding steel's reputation in New Zealand construction.

He walks us through what it actually took. Developing Aotearoa New Zealand's own corrosion durability design method, later adopted in Australia. Adapting capacity design principles from concrete research to make steel perform in earthquakes. And investigating the World Trade Center collapse to separate fact from fear about how steel behaves in fire.

Standards New Zealand has opened public consultation on the proposed revision of NZS 3404 Steel Structures Standard Parts 1 & 2.

The draft revision incorporates nearly three decades of industry and technical developments, including updates covering structural analysis, connections and fasteners, seismic design, fatigue, fire design, fabrication and er****on requirements, and alignment with related standards.

This draft is now available through Standards New Zealand's online consultation platform for public comment.

Scrap supply and electricity supply are key factors in understanding how clean the manufacturing process of steel can be.

Michael Allison modelled both in his research with HERA. The finding: electricity matters, but scrap supply matters more for cutting emissions.

More local scrap in the loop means a bigger emissions win, no new tech required.
