The real TCO advantage isn’t the truck. It’s the energy strategy behind it.
At Downstream, Pamela Walklin and Fonterra's Fabian Lloyd discussed the energy trilemma in heavy transport electrification and what it means for fleet operators.
The emerging competitive frontier is the ability to master energy.
⚡ Secure power early
⚡ Design charging around logistics patterns
⚡ Adapt operations for electric
⚡ Plan for future scale
⚡ Optimise electricity utilisation
By ~2027, electric trucks are expected to reach Total Cost of Ownership parity and move ahead.
At the same time, demand is accelerating. The trucks are coming. The required megawatts are increasing. Grid constraints are becoming more pronounced.
This raises an important question for the sector: How do we scale electrification in a way that supports reliability, affordability, and sustainability?
The opportunity lies in rethinking fleets as energy assets. Through Vehicle-to-Grid, demand flexibility, and grid support, operators can play an active role in supporting the energy system while improving fleet economics.
Realising this opportunity will require coordination across fleet operators, networks, regulators, and technology providers.
This is the transition now underway.
