☀️ 1 in 3 Australian homes generates its own power. In NZ? 1 in 35.
Two big RNZ stories dropped recently that every Kiwi homeowner should read. First, our transmission network is already under serious climate pressure, with thousands of pylons in flood zones and storm outages lasting days. Second, the government looked at subsidising solar like Australia did ($11.5 billion AUD that helped 1 in 3 Aussie homes get panels), then decided on... regulatory tweaks expected to have a "minor" effect.
So no subsidy is coming anytime soon. But here's the thing — you don't have to wait. Battery and solar prices have dropped significantly, and the payback period is getting shorter every year as power prices keep climbing (up 12% last year, another 5% forecast this year). The research already shows it's cheaper to make your own power than buy it from the grid. You just need to get over the upfront cost.
