A winning guess and a lighter lift! 💪🏆 A huge congratulations to Leo Xue Liu from Counties Energy , winner of our crossarm weight challenge at the Annual Connections 2026 Linesman Competition! Charles Simmons and Murray Lipinski handed over the awesome prize of an Ooni Pizza Oven!

Visitors put their muscles to work benchpressing a traditional timber crossarm and our MacLean Power Systems UVMAXX composite fibreglass crossarm, then guessed their weights.

Leo was just 0.4 kg off for each! 🎯

⚡ UVMAXX: Actual 9.6 kg | Leo’s guess 10.0 kg
🌳 Timber: Actual 25.4 kg | Leo’s guess 25.0 kg

That makes UVMAXX around 62% lighter than the timber crossarm in our challenge - an impressive 15.8 kg less to lift, carry and position. For crews working with crossarms in the field, that weight difference means easier handling, from moving equipment on the ground to positioning it at height.

And the benefits go well beyond weight:

🎉 EEA2026 ECL Competition Winner! 🎉

What an incredible response to our crossarm weight competition at EEA2026!

The guesses ranged from just 0.25 kg for the MacLean Power Systems UVMAXX to 15 kg for the traditional timber crossarm - highlighting the remarkable difference between traditional hardwood and this new innovative composite technology.

The actual weights were:
⚡ MacLean Power Systems UVMAXX: 2.6 kg
🪵 Traditional timber crossarm: 5.2 kg

That makes the UVMAXX 50% lighter, with UV-protection resin built into every fibre - not simply applied as a surface coating. It’s also pest, moisture and fire resistant, representing the latest innovation in crossarm technology available in New Zealand.

🏆 A huge congratulations to our winner, Brabbyn Osburn from WEL Networks who guessed 5.2kg for the timber and 2.1kg for the UVMAXX! Your Weber BBQ is on its way to you - enjoy! 🔥

Getting it right starts with getting hands-on.

Our team was out at Aotea Electric Nelson this afternoon, sharing practical knowledge and best-practice techniques around cable termination.

These sessions are about more than just the products. We get into the how and why of correct cable preparation, termination techniques and best practice to help ensure a safe, reliable and quality installation.

With Steve Lewis and Ricky Hewetson bringing years of industry experience and extensive technical knowledge, they're always keen to share it with the tradies out there doing the work.

A big thanks to the Aotea Nelson team for getting involved and making it a great session with lots of engaging discussions.
