For the past 7 years, BTW has been supporting the work of the Taranaki Mounga Project and the Department of Conservation by managing a trapline on Taranaki Maunga. In recognition of this contribution to the restoration of the Maunga, a group of BTW staff were lucky enough to take part in the release of a kiwi on Thursday. This was the first of many kiwi to be returned to Te Papa Kura o Taranaki (the National Park) over the coming months by the Taranaki Kiwi Trust. Being involved in mahi that helps protect and restore our taiao, in partnership with others who care deeply about this place, is something we’re incredibly proud of. Ngā mihi maioha to Taranaki Mounga, Ngā Iwi o Taranaki, DOC, Taranaki Kiwi Trust, NEXT Foundation, Toi Foundation, and everyone involved in this awesome mahi!

Lance Leikis Emerging Planner Award 2026 NZPI Conference

Our very own Lily Berry was awarded the Lance Leikis Emerging Planner Award at the 2026 NZPI Conference in Wellington. The award recognises a significant contribution by an emerging planner to planning practice, the mana of the profession, planning research or Institute affairs at the local or branch level in the first 8 years of their membership. Lily has been
awarded off the back of her natural hazard work at Franz Josef for West Coast Regional Council and her service to NZPI Emerging Planners committees.

Well done Lily, we are very proud of you!

BTW is supporting the transformation of New Plymouth’s city centre through its involvement in the West End Crossing project, a key urban design initiative for Ngāmotu New Plymouth. Utilising the surrounding galleries and eateries, the purpose of the design was to bring people into the space, as a gateway to re-enlivening the centre of New Plymouth township and promoting key tourist attractions. The project forms part of the wider City Centre Strategy’s “Green Links” concept, strengthening pedestrian connections between key destinations across the city centre.

Working alongside design lead and landscape architect Isthmus, BTW delivered survey and services identification, QS, and full civil engineering design services to support both the urban design vision and long-term infrastructure resilience.

The works include renewal of underground three waters infrastructure alongside roading upgrades and pedestrian safety improvements. Delivering these upgrades together improves project efficiency while ensuring the infrastructure beneath the street supports the future needs of the city.

The project also incorporates water sensitive design approaches, helping manage stormwater in a way that supports environmental outcomes while contributing to the quality and character of the public realm.

Construction has now begun, marking the next stage in creating a revitalised and more accessible west end of the city centre.

Late in 2025, BTW’s Environment Team had the privilege of working in one of Aotearoa’s most iconic and challenging locations, the Whakapapa Ski Field on Mt Ruapehu.

Our task? To complete environmental assessments on redundant infrastructure for the Department of Conservation (DOC) and the prime contractor, Naylor Love, supporting safe and efficient deconstruction planned for 2026.

This wasn’t your standard site visit. Accessing the alpine terrain required technical mountain skills, winter equipment (yes, crampons were definitely needed), and a team comfortable working in remote, exposed conditions.
A huge advantage on this project was having one of BTW’s highly qualified mountain guides, Dave, on the team. With extensive alpine experience across Aotearoa and internationally, including, alpine hazard management, and high-altitude navigation, Dave ensured our field teams could operate safely and efficiently in terrain where conditions can shift rapidly. His expertise meant we could access sites quickly, assess hazards, and maintain a high level of safety throughout.
Alongside Dave, our experienced environmental advisor and certified asbestos surveyor, Teone, completed five detailed asbestos surveys across the redundant infrastructure. This work will enable the safe removal of buildings during 2026 and ensure that all future works meet strict environmental and health standards.

We love projects like this, where unique environments meet unique challenges, and we take pride in our ability to 'make it happen' safely while delivering high‑quality, fit‑for‑purpose technical reports for clients across New Zealand.
If your project is in a remote, complex, or unusual location, our team is always ready to help.

Daylighting of the Huatoki Stream represents a pivotal shift in how central New Plymouth will evolve. As demolition begins at Metro Plaza, the awa will once again shape the identity and experience of the CBD.

BTW has been involved as Environmental Engineering specialists (as part of a broader project team), guiding the daylighting approach and providing supporting survey services as part of a wider Public and Private Partner project team. This work contributes to NPDC’s broader CBD strategy programme focused on resilience and place-led design.

The vision is clear: a city centre designed in response to the awa, with adjoining spaces, structures and building orientated around this natural feature.

Sean Husband, BTW Civil Team Leader shares, “This project is underpinned by a Mai Taranaki Maunga ki Uta ki Tai catchment approach, reflecting an integrated view of environmental restoration, urban design and long-term resilience."

At BTW, we value projects that connect infrastructure, ecology and community outcomes. This is an important step forward for Ngāmotu.

Here is a glimpse of some of the awesome freshwater species BTW Ecology have been relocating. Summer is often a busy earthworks season with instream works underway for vegetation clearances, culvert removals and replacements across the motu.

To help protect our native and game fish species, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations, BTW have been hard at work undertaking fish salvages prior to instream works being carried out.
Methods being used to capture our fishy friends have involved electrofishing and overnight trapping techniques. Once caught, these fish species are identified, counted, have a quick health check, and then released to an undisturbed area away from the earthworks site. Practical environmental care in action.

If you need ecological support for your upcoming works, our team is here to help.

Note: These fish encounters and salvages have been conducted under relevant permits.

Always good to see great kit arrive. Even better when it directly benefits our clients.
The new Leica TS20 now in our Taupō and Hamilton offices means faster, more accurate surveying, reduced time on site, and clearer information to support smarter land and infrastructure decisions. It’s another way we’re investing in technology that improves outcomes.

And as our work across the Central North Island continues to grow, so does our team. We’re currently looking for a Geospatial and Engineering Surveyor to join our Taupō office. Are you someone who values quality, collaboration, and working with modern equipment backed by a supportive, multidisciplinary team?
