Ōmokoroa households – interested in making your home more energy-smart? Powerco’s energy trial, A Simple Shift, is exploring how technology like solar, batteries and smart hot water systems can help households use power at better times, reduce pressure on the local network and support a more efficient energy future. Incentives of up to $4000 for the first 500 participants are available to help you get started.

Come along to the roadshow to chat with local installers, ask questions and see what could work for your home.

It was great to be part of the Tairua Disaster Resilience Expo last weekend in the Coromandel, which brought together around 125 community members to learn more about preparing for emergencies at home.
The event provided practical opportunities for people to learn, connect and think about how they would respond in an emergency.
Our Community Engagement team was there to chat with locals about being prepared for a power outage, including what plans and supplies they had in place to manage without electricity.
One of the key takeaways from the day was that some attendees realised they might not be as prepared as they thought. They left with plans to put things in place to be better prepared for whatever the future might bring.

⚡ Downed power lines can kill ⚡

Always treat downed power lines as live and stay at least 10 metres away - that's about a bus length. If a power line falls onto a vehicle, stay inside the vehicle until emergency services or power crews confirm it is safe. Never attempt to rescue someone from a vehicle in contact with power lines until it's been confirmed the lines have been de-energised.

If you see downed power lines, keep clear and call 0800 27 27 27 or 111. More safety information in the comments. 👇⚠️

🌱6,000 native seedlings
👨‍👩‍👦‍👦~110 local people
🎉1 incredible community effort

For the third year running, we’re proud to support this planting through our Replant for Tomorrow programme, alongside Rotary K Valley Centennial Trust and the many organisations and community members who help make this project possible.

The 800-acre Kopurererua Valley is the largest wetland within a city boundary in Australasia and is becoming an increasingly popular place for people to enjoy walking and biking. But, perhaps most importantly, the restoration of the wetlands is creating valuable native habitat, helping bring wildlife back to the area and supporting a healthier environment for the future.

This transformation has been decades in the making. Since 2004, Tauranga’s four Rotary clubs have helped support efforts to restore the valley, with an estimated 500,000 native seedlings planted to support its return to natural habitat. It’s a wonderful example of what can be achieved when a community gets behind something that matters.

Through Replant for Tomorrow, we’re proud to support planting projects across our network where native trees and plants can thrive. And we love seeing the local people, organisations and partners who make these efforts possible, year after year.

Because creating a healthier environment for the future is something we can all play a part in. 🌿

🤔How do you install a power cable under a harbour without disturbing the seabed? 💡Tunnel underneath.💡

Starting next week, we'll be installing a new electricity cable beneath Whitianga Harbour - up to six metres below the harbour floor. The new cable will help provide a stronger, more resilient power supply for Whitianga, Cooks Beach and surrounding Coromandel Peninsula communities. A pretty impressive piece of engineering, all happening beneath the harbour!

Our contractors will use directional drilling, a low impact method that avoids disturbing the harbour floor, and we engaged with mana whenua, local council, and Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga as part of the planning and consents process.

During construction:
👉🏼 The Ferry Landing carpark on Purangi Road, Cooks Beach, will be unavailable from the week of 5 October for about six weeks (or longer, if required).
👉🏼There are 60 additional carparks available nearby on Purangi Road.
👉🏼Ferry services and access to the public toilets will remain unaffected.
👉🏼Traffic management will be in place.
👉🏼Construction machinery and contractors will be working in the area.

Since launching the Powerco Community Fund in 2023, we’ve supported more than 110 community groups across our network to bring projects and initiatives to life that make a positive difference in their communities.

From supporting wellbeing and resilience to creating opportunities for people to connect, learn and grow, we love working alongside the people who know their communities best.

We find the people closest to a community are the ones with the best ideas about what it needs.

The Powerco Community Fund gives us a way to support those ideas, helping local people turn their vision into something that benefits the wider community.

And we’re proud to keep supporting the people and organisations doing great things in the places we’re privileged to be part of.

Here's a 2025 Powerco Community Fund recipient, Keep Te Puke Beautiful, who hosted a clean up along the rail corridor between Bramble Bridge and the Jocelyn Street bridge in November last year.
