⚫️🟡 Ngunguru Women’s Football team Vs Tikipunga Women’s game recap:💥
Another home game for Ngunguru, the local derby with their closest rival Tikipunga. Coach Sandi and the ladies anticipated another tough match against a good opposition comprising a mix of young and experienced players.
Ngunguru, who were without their captain Ayla, chose a 4-4-2 formation. Right from the whistle both teams fiercely contested for possession of the ball. Ngunguru, had some excellent phases, passing back to the defensive line to reset the forward momentum, Jayde in central midfield was a workhorse again, and alongside Kate, and wingers Jesse and Liv, midfield helped drive the ball to the strikers Sophie and Rylie. Ngunguru had a few opportunities from outside the eighteen yard box. Tikipunga's defense was solid and stopped a lot of Ngunguru's attacking play, Tikipunga often cleared the ball up to their midfield and strikers, which was great linking play and often dropped the ball back for long range shots.
However, Tikipunga were held up by the brick wall of the Ngunguru backline who used slick communication, excellent awareness, and positioning. Very little got passed Abbey, Leah, Emily, Meika and Tia. When Tikipunga threatened with two good opportunities; one a good cross which Charlotte saved with ease, and another low shot which fortunately hit the goal post and Meika cleared it out. Halftime score was 0-0.
The second half battle started with both teams hungry for a goal. The duel for the ball continued, with players from both teams displaying determination, courage, and energy. Ngunguru had another mother daughter combination, with Meika’s daughter Bailey debuting for Ngunguru. Bailey was an excellent addition, she linked up with other players and helped to push the ball upfield. Ngunguru took a direct free kick just outside the box but unfortunately the ball went over the crossbar.
The last twenty five minutes was played in torrential rain, which slowed the ball down. Despite the conditions both teams pressed on in the battle. Talia's speed and constant pressure threatened Tikipunga. Tikipunga continued to press up field on attack. Abbey controlled the backline and the team as captain, using her experience and knowledge.
Ngunguru were pleased with the end result being 0-0.
