Another awesome week with the NZ Wildlands Studies crew here in Te Tai Tokerau 🌊

For the past four years, we’ve partnered with NZ Wildlands to deliver the marine component of their nationwide field studies programme — combining science, field skills, culture, and connection to place.

This trip included snorkel surveys comparing rāhui and non-protected reefs, marine monitoring workshops, mapping and digital data collection, trapping workshops, and time spent learning within Ngati Mau tikanga at Aroha Island alongside Nga Kaitiaki o Te Motu Aroha Trust.

A huge thank you to the Wildlands team, Izzie from Kerikeri Peninsula Conservation Trust, and the awesome TriOceans crew for another great week of learning, exploration, and connection in the moana.

A fantastic day at Aroha Island with our new friends from Te Puna Aroha Kaitaia!

Under the guidance of Ngati Mau, we welcomed our manuhiri onto Motu Aroha before spending the day exploring the mātauranga, taiao, and biodiversity of both the whenua and moana surrounding the island.

From microscopes and SLR photography through to hands-on marine exploration, shared kai, and even a kiwi encounter to finish the day, it was a special opportunity to connect with nature, learning, and each other.

Looking forward to growing this new partnership and welcoming the roopu back again soon

April Marine Field Course wrapped up last week — what a great week!

From deploying BRUVs and piloting the ROV, to building field data collections systems and mapping GIS outputs, we spent our days immersed in the Bay of Islands — learning by doing, in real conditions.

A real highlight: we built a new BRUV and underwater quadrat, ready for our student to take home and support their own monitoring efforts.

Along the way: new skills, new perspectives, and a few solid additions to the blue network.

Want to kick-start your marine field skills?
This April, we’re running a 5-day immersive Marine Science Field Course in the Bay of Islands — designed to take participants through the full research process, from field data collection to analysis.
Over five days you’ll:
🔬 Build digital systems for marine data collection
🚤 Develop practical boating and on-water operational skills
🤖 Operate ROVs and learn photogrammetry techniques
🗺 Learn practical GIS workflows
🧠 Be immersed in the world of marine research

You’ll also stay at our headquarters in the Bay of Islands, surrounded by culture, native forest and wildlife — a unique base for marine field training.
📅 April 20–24
👥 Maximum 6 participants
Applications are now open, and places are limited.

Applications are now open for our April 20–24 Bay of Islands Marine Field Course.
A 5-day immersive marine research training experience in the Bay of Islands — combining vessel-based fieldwork and classroom analysis, with accommodation provided at Aroha Island.
Participants will:
• Design and build a digital marine data collection system
• Deploy that system in the field from our research vessel
• Develop practical boating and on-water operational skill
• Use research tools such as ROVs and photogrammetry
• Learn introductory GIS workflows for spatial analysis

Over five intensive days, participants move through the full research cycle — from designing a study and collecting data on the water, to analysing results and discussing conservation implications. Set within a complex marine management environment, including Controlled Areas, rāhui, Mātaitai and Marine Mammal Sanctuaries, the course fast-tracks your transition from theory to confident field application.
This course is ideal for university students in marine science, ecology or conservation, and is also open to anyone seeking field research experience.
📍 Bay of Islands
📅 April 20–24
👥 Maximum 6 participants
💰 Course fee: $3,200
Includes accommodation and all research and boating equipment.
Food not included.

E-STEM at the library is back this week!
Don't miss our session this Tuesday 4th November at 3:30pm in the Procter Library Community room.
We will be experimenting with coastal erosion and the role of mangroves. 🌊
These sessions are free and made possible thanks to the NAAEE and Pratt & Whitney.

We had a great time at E-STEM at the Library session, exploring the properties of salinity🧪
Together, we discussed how the salinity of our oceans is at risk of changing, and what this could mean for our marine animals 🐠🦞

Make sure you come along on Tuesday the 4th of November to see what else we have in store!🐋🌊
