At 3am most Saturdays, Terrance Nota is already out running hills with a head torch on.

This week, the 1M Service Technician is in South Africa preparing to take on the Comrades Marathon — an 85km ultramarathon with a 2,000m climb that’s regarded as one of the toughest endurance races in the world.

A few years ago, Terrance had never run before. After a minor heart attack and health scare, he decided it was time to make some changes for himself and his family.

Now he’s preparing to take on the race for the third time.

Every workplace is shaped by the people inside it.

The stories they carry. The traditions they grew up with. The meals they remember from family kitchens and celebrations growing up.

🌏 To mark World Day for Cultural Diversity, colleagues across OCS Limited (NZ), OCS Group Australia Pty Ltd. and 1M have shared recipes connected to culture, family and home as part of a shared cookbook project.

Inside are dishes passed down through generations, recipes carried across countries through migration, and meals still made today exactly as they always have been.

Across 1M, those different experiences and perspectives are part of what our people bring to work every day – whether that’s solving problems onsite, supporting customers, or looking after each other.

The Sally's work provides vital support where it's needed most in the communities we serve across Aotearoa New Zealand.

Through volunteering and support our teams are committed to creating meaningful change where it matters.

This winter, our colleagues once again got behind The Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal, volunteering their time to collect donations which will help give a hand up to people struggling to afford the basics.

This week we’re marking New Zealand Sign Language Week | Te Wiki O Te Reo Turi.

It’s now 20 years since New Zealand Sign Language was recognised as an official language in Aotearoa, but there is still a long way to go before anyone can sign anywhere.

Language is about much more than communication. It gives us belonging, connection and opportunity.

Our colleagues overcome language barriers every day. It’s the nature of our truly diverse team.

Learning a few words or taking time to translate together doesn’t have to be hard – especially with the help of technology.

It’s here, at this moment of intention, that two of our TRUE values, Respect and Unity, come to life and relationships are built.

Did you know:

👉 NZSL is its own language completely different to spoken English. Signs express concepts rather than singular words.
👉 There are more than 300 different sign languages around the world.
👉 Sign doesn’t only happen with hands. Facial expressions, eye contact and body language are essential in conveying meaning.
👉 Eye contact means connection, while looking away signals the conversation is over.
👉 Technology is bridging barriers. Reach for your notes or messaging apps to converse.

Protecting people isn’t just about procedures.

It’s making sure our colleagues get home safe and well each day.

This World Day for Safety and Health at Work focuses on psychological health. Stress, burnout, and difficult interactions can affect anyone, and they don’t stay separate from work.

Across our sites, that means looking out for each other, speaking up when something isn’t right, and taking concerns seriously when they’re raised.

That’s part of how we work at 1M.

Over the past week, we’ve been marking International Women’s Day 2026 and this year’s theme, Give to Gain.

For Heather Currie, Client Services Manager at 1M, that idea is simple: when women share knowledge, support each other and open doors, everyone grows.

Heather didn’t start her career in mechanical services. She built her understanding of the industry by asking questions, visiting sites and learning how the systems behind buildings actually work.

Today she’s focused on helping others find their place in the sector — particularly women entering an industry where they are still under-represented.

🏆 17-year-old Jusef Sabino (the son of one of our site managers, William) has been named the 2026 OCS | 1M First Foundation scholar. 🏆

Jusef plans to study mechatronics engineering at the University of Waikato in 2027 after Year 13. His interest in engineering began when he was young, encouraged by his grandfather.

The scholarship provides students with mentoring, financial support, paid work experience and guidance as they prepare for university and for each year of study.
