Get the drawings, get the gear, get to work!

This one’s been a joint effort across the group. Lucky we’ve got a team who’s epic at working together to get the job done. Hours, steel and plenty of problem-solving showing up for this project… teamwork makes the dream work. This silos now on in way out for install and commission!

There’s something bloody rewarding about watching a project come to life from a set of drawings, to seeing it standing in front of you! I’m sure the boys who brought this to life will see this, you should be proud!

We would love to build something for you.

LEE’S TOOLBOX - DAD’S DOT PUNCH 🤜🏼

It’s simple.

It’s old.

And they just don’t make them like this anymore.

“This one has been in my toolbox for more than 20 years.

It was already well-used before it came to me from Dad, (Mike) who was a welder here (BLM) when I first started here 39 years ago”

Lee’s never had to sharpen it.

And, as he puts it:

“You just can’t buy them like this anymore.”

“To most people, they might just look like a few old pieces of steel, but to me, they’re reminders of people”

And maybe that’s the real story here. The yarns and tales behind the tools and things we hang onto.

They’re reminders of our first jobs. Our mates. Our parents and the people who taught us how to work.

Sometimes a tool lasts for decades because it’s a bloody good tool and sometimes we keep it because of who it reminds us of.

DAVE’S TOOLBOX - THE WELDING HELMET 🪖

This welding helmet has travelled!

It made its way over from Shetland, Scotland when Dave and his family moved back to New Zealand about 20 years ago.

Back in Shetland, Dave was working for Malakoff & Moore, carrying out engineering repairs on everything from fishing boats to working vessels over 100 feet long.

And this wasn’t just any welding helmet. It was one of four. A bulldog, a bear, a robot and Dave’s skull!

“A mate had found them in the US and they shipped them over to Scotland, thinking they’d liven up the yard and give everyone a bit of a laugh

It bloody well did!

“It’s picked up a few battle scars over the years, but it’s still doing exactly what it was made for.”

There are plenty of shiny new tools around these days. But sometimes the old ones have something the new ones don’t: history.

JERRY’S TOOLBOX - THE VERNIER CALIPER 📏

At first glance, it’s just another measuring tool, but not this one. This one belonged to Jerry’s Dad, Tony.

Jerry started his apprenticeship in England at Spirax Sarco, working in precision engineering as a toolmaker.

When Jerry was 16, he needed a caliper, Dad reached into his tool chest, pulled this one out and handed it to him…

“Off you go, son!”

Tony was a highly skilled precision toolmaker also with a love of aerospace. He worked on making and prototyping aircraft components, as well as the intricate tools and parts involved in the development and manufacture of the first Concorde! Coooool!!

“This isn’t just a caliper. It’s a piece of Dad’s working life.”

“Whether Dad’s pieces ever made it into the sky is hard to say, but the work itself was part of something pretty extraordinary.”

That’s the thing about old tools.

You can replace them but you can’t always replace what they mean.

Some things in a welder’s toolbox are worth far more than their price tag.

Every workshop has them. Every tradie has them.

The old tools that have seen better days. The ones with a few battle scars. The ones that probably wouldn’t make the cut when you’re browsing the shelves of the shiny tool van.

But there’s a reason they’re still there.

A bit of smoko-room chat about a few heirloom tools sparked plenty of interest this week. So many stories and lots of nostalgia. We knew we wanted to capture this.

Because behind every well-used tool is a story. And often, that story is worth far more than the tool itself.

So, we’re opening a few toolboxes around the workshop to find out what’s inside and, more importantly, the stories behind these tools.

Welcome to Toolbox Heirlooms - follow along over the next few days as we dive into some epic tales.

CNC Machined Split Bushes + Pins 💪🏻

Made right here in Morrinsville at , these bushes and pins are built tough for heavy-duty mechanical assemblies, these one specifically for grapple arms.

Produced on our Takisawa EX-308, the expanding bush design locks securely into place as the M24 bolt tightens, helping keep grapple pins tight, secure, and hard-wearing on site. Practical Kiwi engineering - how cool is our team!
