Southland Carbon Biochar and Smoke Condensate (Wood Vinegar)

26/08/2026

There’s no need to explain the benefits to these Valais Blacknose ewes; they’re already fighting over the Pro-Min Lick.

Animals are often remarkably good at seeking out the minerals and support they need, particularly during demanding stages of the farming season.

Combining a quality mineral lick with biochar provides a practical way to support digestive health, mineral intake and overall resilience while allowing livestock to access it as needed.

Sometimes, the ewes tell the story better than we ever could.

August can be one of the most challenging times of year for deer.

Winter pasture covers are often at their lowest, soils remain cold and wet, pasture energy can be poor, and meaningful spring growth may still be weeks away.

This winter feed gap can contribute to weight loss, declining body condition, lower milk production in hinds following calving and weaker velvet growth in stags. Young deer can be particularly vulnerable.

Consistent access to biochar can support digestive function and help build resilience during these periods of nutritional and environmental stress.

You may not be able to control the weather, but you can strengthen the system supporting your animals through it.

Healthy plants begin below the surface.

When preparing compost or potting mix in the glasshouse, aim to include approximately 5–10% biochar.

Biochar creates a highly porous framework within the growing mix, helping retain moisture and nutrients while providing valuable habitat for beneficial microbial activity.

It’s a simple addition that can support stronger roots, healthier plants and a more resilient growing environment.

A little biochar can make a big difference to what happens both above and below the soil.

Give seedlings the right foundation from day one.

Our upcoming seed-raising mix brings together biochar and wood vinegar to support germination, early root development and nutrient capture.

As the seedlings grow, their roots move through and around the biochar, helping hold it within the root zone before the plants even reach the soil.

Once planted, that biochar remains close to the roots, where it can continue capturing moisture and nutrients each time the plant is watered or fed.

It’s about establishing a stronger root system early and giving every seedling a better framework for future growth.

Warning: once you experience the calm of having biochar consistently in your farming system, you may not want to go back.

A more resilient system means fewer surprises and greater confidence when conditions become challenging.

Before long, you’ll find yourself asking bigger questions about the connections between microbes, plants, minerals, soil and the rumen.

Biochar is more than another farm input. It can be the gateway to understanding and working alongside the natural systems already supporting your farm.

Once you see those connections, you can’t unsee them.

Once you’ve used biochar consistently in your farming system, it can be hard to imagine farming without it.

Not because it creates more noise, complexity or work, but because it brings a sense of calm. The system becomes more resilient, nutrients are better supported, and the pressure points become easier to manage.

Then the questions start.

How are the microbes, plants, minerals and rumen all interacting? How can we work more closely with the natural systems already operating on the farm?

Biochar is often the starting point for seeing farming through a different lens. And recognising the gifts nature has already given us.

Every innovation starts with a question.

For Southland Carbon founders, that question was simple:
How can we improve animal nutrition, soil health and farm resilience using natural solutions?

That journey led us to biochar and years of learning, testing and refining how biochar can support productive farming systems throughout New Zealand.

We're incredibly grateful that Environment Southland recently shared our story and the journey behind Southland Carbon.

It's a story of curiosity, innovation and a belief that healthy soils and healthy animals go hand in hand.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way.

Not all biochar is created equal.

As biochar becomes more popular, it's worth asking an important question:

Is the biochar you're buying produced to recognised industry standards?

Southland Carbon produces Feed Grade 1 Biochar in accordance with the ANZBIG Code of Practice, providing confidence around quality, consistency and suitability for agricultural use.

Before purchasing biochar, ask your supplier:

-What grade is it?
- Is it independently tested?
- Is it produced to an industry code of practice?
- Can they provide supporting documentation?

Quality matters when it comes to your livestock, soils and farm performance.
