This family home was designed and built by us! We gathered all our knowledge, experience and creative desires, mashed it all together and squeezed it through a tight budget.
Not quite so simple, we drew endless concepts and had plenty arguments!
We understand now how couples can be strained under the weight of the most important financial decisions of their lives. Most importantly we learned how to compromise, and harmonise the process, eventually!
We ensured the home was a fun space for our kids to grow up, whacky yet balanced within design guidelines, achieved high performance and had a thorough thermal envelope. Cross-ventilation was considered by window position and open flow throughout the house. The home is kept warm by the fully insulated polished concrete slab with underfloor heating. Helped by the 140mm walls with Terra Lana wool insulation, and glazing calculated carefully for maximum solar gain.
The Hunter & Hazel House achieved a NZGBC Homestar 6 Rating due to its performance and sustainability features. This allowed us to receive a special home loan rate discount.
