Employee Recognition Friday

Brendon Gridley may not be a direct employee, but as a long-term contractor and valued member of our site teams, he has become an important part of the Scotts family. This week we're shining a spotlight on Brendon and the passion, energy, and commitment he brings both on and off the construction site.

When asked what he enjoys most about working with Scotts, the answer was simple:

"The people, without a doubt. Scotts has an awesome team culture where everyone is treated with respect and works together to get the job done right. Even as a contractor, I’ve always felt like part of the family rather than just another number on site."

One of his favourite projects has been the work at the new Maitai Specialist School, where he's enjoyed watching the development come together alongside a great crew.

"It’s been great seeing something you’ve helped build make a positive impact on the community."

Outside of work, things don't slow down. Alongside his wife Linda and their three adult children, he runs a professional go-kart racing team that competes throughout New Zealand and Australia.

Between organising travel, tuning karts, chasing lap times and helping drivers reach the podium, there's always something happening.

"The pressure, teamwork and attention to detail required in racing aren’t that different from construction—just a lot noisier."

When he's not on a construction site or at the race track, you'll likely find him out fishing, spending time with family, or making sure the lawns are looking immaculate.

As he puts it:

"My life is basically split between construction sites, race tracks, fishing spots, and the ride-on mower."

Thank you for everything you bring to the Scotts team. We appreciate your hard work, positive attitude, and the experience you bring to every project.

Project Spotlight | Nelson City Council Community Arts Hub

We are proud to be delivering the Community Arts Hub Project at Millers Acre, a project that will create a vibrant new home for Nelson’s arts community in the heart of the city.

The project involves the refurbishment of both the northern and southern Millers Acre buildings, the installation of an accessible lift to the southern building, and a comprehensive internal fit-out to create a welcoming and functional space for artists, creatives, and the wider community.

Once complete, the Arts Development Agency will occupy this highly visible gateway site, providing a central hub for artistic collaboration, exhibitions, workshops, events, and creative enterprise.

The development represents an important investment in Nelson’s creative sector and supports the vision outlined in He Tātai Whetū – Whakatū Nelson’s Arts and Creativity Strategy.

Designed by Arthouse Architects and delivered in partnership with Nelson City Council, this project will help strengthen connections across the arts community while making creativity more accessible and visible to locals and visitors alike.

A special acknowledgement to Site Manager Matt Welford and the wider project team for their work on what will become an important cultural asset for our region.

We look forward to sharing progress as this exciting project continues to take shape.

A huge night for a great cause.

Scott Construction was proud to take part in Heave for Hospice, supporting the incredible work Hospice does for our community.

A massive shout out to our team: Scott W, Ernst, Johan, Reuben, Ben K, John H, Dave T and Chris from ITM. A special mention to Emmsy for leading from the front as team captain, and to Becs and Steve for pulling it all together behind the scenes.

The biggest winner on the night was Hospice, and we were proud to play a small part in supporting such an important organisation.

Congratulations to Downer on taking out the win, and we are pretty stoked to come away as runners up for the evening.

Thanks again to everyone who gave up their time to compete, cheer us on and support the cause.

Better luck next year, Gibbons.

Employee recognition Friday

Outside of work, Hamish enjoys making the most of his time with his wife and family. He’s also been putting his construction mindset to good use on his own home project, taking pride in building something personal.

After several years in Queenstown, Hamish has embraced the move to Scott Construction Nelson — swapping the snow and mountains for the ocean, beaches, and a new pace of life. While the setting has changed, he continues to be involved in exciting and challenging projects across the South Island.

Hamish primarily supports our Central team, while working remotely from our Nelson office — offering the best of both worlds and staying closely connected across the business.

We’re lucky to have Hamish on the team and appreciate the experience and commitment he brings to every project.

A huge shout out to our incredible Heave for Hospice team — The Load Bearers.

These exceptional humans have been giving up their own time to train and prepare, showing real commitment, teamwork, and determination ahead of competition day tomorrow.

We are incredibly proud to support such a great group representing Scotts, all while getting behind an amazing cause that does so much for our community.

Best of luck to the team tomorrow — we know you’ll do us proud.

A special thank you as well to Hospice for organising such a fun, community-minded event and for the incredible work you do every day.

Great progress on the Northview project, with the team successfully completing the main structure.

Key milestones have come together over the past few weeks, including the final slab pour on 23 April, the last of the concrete panels installed before 1 May, and the completion of the roof structural steel just last week. It’s a significant step forward and a credit to the work on site.

The focus now shifts to the next phase, with roof framing, structural steel strapping, and internal framing underway. Service trades will begin on the ground floor and move up through the levels, keeping pace with the build.

With external joinery already ordered for the entire building, the team is looking forward to closing in the structure and pushing ahead through the cooler months.

A big thanks to Stephen and the team for the continued effort and momentum on site. And with views like these, it’s not a bad place to be.

A huge thank you to ANZ and Gallagher Insurance for hosting such a wonderful Pink Ribbon Breakfast last week.

We were lucky enough to have most of the Scotts women attend, and it was really special to spend time together while celebrating and supporting such an important cause.

It was a great reminder of the strength, connection, and community among women, and we’re proud to support the incredible work being done through Pink Ribbon.

We are officially in at 1 Boxman Place — our new home.

As JC said, “It has been a long time coming and we are extremely excited to start our new chapter here. From humble beginnings on Pascoe Street with Kevin, to now growing from a team of 12 employees to close to 150 across here and Central, it’s incredible to reflect on how far we’ve come.”

Moving into a purpose-built Green Star building is a real privilege, and marks an exciting milestone for Scotts as we continue to grow and invest in our future. The new space has been designed to support collaboration, innovation, and the people who make our business what it is.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the move such a smooth and successful process — from the movers and IT team, to every member of the office who rolled up their sleeves and mucked in. It was a genuine team effort, and we are excited for what comes next in this new chapter.

Watch this space for more insight into what makes this office so special — from its Green Star design credentials to the use of CLT construction and the many thoughtful details that make this an exceptional place to work.
