That beautiful deck on my last post is just one example of the work I love doing 👏
I’m currently available for new projects and would be happy to help with anything from decks and fencing to painting, plastering, bathrooms, tiling, and everything in between.

This deck is where it all really started for me.
Built back in 2017 alongside a great builder mate Toby Roberts and my late father-in-law, this was one of my first major projects—and the one that really sparked my passion for building.
We designed and extended the space to make it more functional, adding built-in bench seating, a bar leaner and finishing it in 90mm Vitex hardwood. It was a proper hands-on project, full of learning, problem-solving, and a fair bit of pride when it all came together.
Looking back now, it’s pretty special—not just for what we built, but for the memories tied into it.
Fast forward to today, and that passion has turned into The Lochside Builder.

Kia Ora Taupō, I thought I’d jump on and properly introduce myself. My name’s Jak – a proud Scotsman who made the move to New Zealand back in 2007. Not long after arriving, I met my amazing Kiwi wife Jules, and we’ve built a pretty great life here in Taupō with our family.
Before getting into building, I spent many years in hospitality. But I always had a passion for working with my hands and creating things, so a few years ago I decided to back myself and make the change into building.
Now, 5 years on, I’ve gained my carpentry qualification and built up a solid range of skills I use every day. From decks and fencing to renovations, painting, plastering, tiling and waterproofing – I’m all about getting stuck in and doing the job properly.
I’ve started The Lochside Builder to offer honest, reliable, no-fuss building work you can trust.
