There's a new wave of slick all-in-one solar batteries hitting
the NZ market. They're great for grid-tied homes. But should
you use one for true off-grid?

Our take: usually no. Here's why surge capacity, repairability,
and 50 years of field data still matter when there's no grid
behind you.

Low-frequency vs high-frequency inverters for off-grid: why surge capacity, modular repair, and track record matter when there's no grid behind you.

Filling up the car this week? Yeah, we all felt that.

Petrol's pushing $4 a litre. Power bills went up 12% last year and are climbing again from April. And we're being told it could get worse before it gets better.

So here's something most people don't realise β€” every major bank in NZ is offering green energy loans at 0–1% interest for solar panels and batteries. Westpac will lend you up to $50k interest-free for 5 years. ASB just reported a 33% spike in green loan applications.

One requirement from the banks: your installer has to be a SEANZ member (Sustainable Energy Association of NZ). That's us. MEDA is a registered SEANZ member, so when you purchase through us you're eligible for these loans.

Energy expert Mike Casey (Rewiring Aotearoa) put it pretty simply β€” rooftop solar is an "absolute economic slam dunk." Even borrowing at 5.5% on your mortgage, you come out ahead because the savings on your power bill outweigh the repayments.

We've been helping Kiwis go solar and off-grid for over 10 years. If you've been thinking about it, the numbers have never stacked up better than right now.

Planning to go off grid in New Zealand?

One of the biggest mistakes we see is people sizing solar systems using overseas guides that do not account for NZ winters, cloud cover, and real appliance loads like heat pumps and electric hot water.

Here is a practical NZ guide that explains:
β€’ How much solar you actually need
β€’ How much battery storage is realistic
β€’ Tiny home vs lifestyle block system sizing
β€’ Why winter matters more than summer

If you are planning a tiny home, rural build, or lifestyle block, this will help you avoid under sizing your system.

Planning to go off grid in New Zealand? Learn how much solar and battery storage you actually need for a reliable off grid solar system based on NZ conditions, property type, and power usage.

A recently completed MEDA system for a motorhome owner who needed more β€” more capacity, more headroom, more confidence in what the system could handle.
The upgrade centres on a 3kW Victron MultiPlus-II inverter and 8.2kWh of lithium battery storage. That combination means you can run typical motorhome loads together without juggling or compromising. Induction cooktop at lunch, air conditioning on a hot afternoon, devices charging β€” the system's built to handle it.
1100 watts of solar split across two Victron SmartSolar MPPT controllers keeps the batteries topped up steadily. Dual MPPTs mean more consistent charging when conditions aren't perfect, and better performance across varied roof layouts.
The GX device gives you real-time insight into what's happening β€” what's being generated, what's being drawn, how the battery's tracking. It's monitoring that actually makes sense, not just numbers on a screen.
This is what a well-sized system feels like. Not underpowered. Not over-complicated. Just enough capacity and the right equipment so you're not thinking about power all day.
Victron components, LiFePO4 chemistry, proper monitoring, and an install that's built to last.

⚑ A Clean, Simple Option for Home Battery Storage ⚑
If you're looking at solar for your home, the new Dyness Cygni is a really tidy option. It combines an 8kW or 10kW hybrid inverter with stackable batteries up to 15kWh, all in one compact tower that fits neatly in a garage, outdoors or utility space.

It stores your excess solar for evenings, allows exporting back to the grid, and can provide backup power when the grid drops out for peace of mind.

Here is a couple installs we have completed recently (photos below πŸ‘‡), and it’s proving to be a great fit for residential homes wanting simple, reliable energy storage.

β˜€οΈ Rural solar refresh β˜€οΈ

We’ve just finished upgrading an older off-grid setup on a rural property to our Premium Power Kit. The old system had served well for years, but it was time for something more reliable with extra storage and better monitoring.

The new kit includes:

Victron Multiplus inverter/charger

Victron SmartSolar charge controllers (MPPTs)

Dyness DL5.0 rack mount lithium batteries 20kwh

Das Solar 440W panels

Victron Ekrano GX for monitoring

We were also able to make use of the property’s existing solar panels by adding extra MPPTs, so everything works together in one system without anything going to waste.

Always a good feeling bringing an older setup back to life
