Worksafe has published advice for workplaces following a recall announced by MBIE on coloured sand available at a range of NZ stationery and hobby stores.
If your workplace stores or uses this coloured sand, treat it as asbestos-contaminated until proven otherwise.
• Seal and isolate unopened containers and move it to a secure location away from people
• Evacuate and block off any areas where the sand is in use
• Do not vacuum or sweep floors where there’s sand or attempt to clean it up – contact a licensed asbestos professional immediately
• If individuals are currently using the sand, put it down and relocate to a sand-free, well-ventilated area
• Educational facilities should notify the Ministry of Education on 0800 323 323 if sand has been used on site.
WorkSafe is urgently visiting identified importers and distributors on-site to assess risks and support a coordinated response. We’re here to help workplaces manage this safely and responsibly.
