EastPack History

1983: Rangitaiki Fruit Packers Limited (now EastPack) begins
Land purchased on Eastbank Road, Edgecumbe – now site of EastPack head office
Packed 60,000 trays for 23 shareholders

1987: Edgecumbe Earthquake

1992: Kiwifruit market crash

1996: Purchased Opotiki Co-op – increasing supply to
3 million trays

1997: RFP changed its name to EastPack

2000: Purchased Zest Company


2001: Production increased to 6.6 million trays

2001: EastPack invests more than $20 million in packhouse and coolstore in Te Puke

2009: EastPack invests $9 million state of the art semi- automated fruit grader and sizer and coolstores in Te Puke

2010: Psa discovered in Te Puke
EastPack reports $10.5 million profit

2011: EastPack packs a record 21.4 million trays
Two new coolstores in Te Puke and one in Edgecumbe
EastPack offers 20 cents per tray reduction in packing costs for 2012 and 20 cents cash rebate

2013: EastPack and Satara merge to become the largest Post-Harvest operator in the industry. The merger delivers sustainably competitive packing rates, greater depth of technical expertise, and continued strong grower returns.

Meet Nanique Bonthuys, our 2026 Bay of Plenty Young Grower of the Year contestant.

Nanique is an Orchard Manager with Prospa, based in Ōpōtiki. With five years of experience in the horticulture industry, she enjoys the hands-on nature of orchard work and the variety of challenges each season brings.

Driven by a passion for continuous learning, Nanique is focused on developing both her technical and leadership skills, particularly in team management and orchard performance. She entered the Bay of Plenty Young Grower competition to challenge herself, build confidence, and connect with others who share her passion for horticulture.

Outside of work, Nanique enjoys running and spending quality time with family and friends.

Come along and support Nanique tomorrow as she competes in the 2026 Bay of Plenty Young Grower competition.

EastPack’s kiwi dad Aotearoa has been busy nesting again this season! Two of our lucky team members went along with Whakatāne Kiwi Trust to collect the eggs from his nest so they could be taken to the national hatchery for incubation and rearing. They were met with the cutest little surprise, a 5-day old kiwi chick! 😍
EastPack are proud to support the Whakatāne Kiwi Trust and all the hard work they do in protecting our national icon, the kiwi. 💪
