Awarded Regional Gold for New Home $750,000 - $1 million in the Southern House of the Year 2025, Bills Way’s refined simplicity hides intricate craftsmanship.

Built with the precision of a furniture piece, its apparent simplicity belies the complexity beneath, where bespoke solutions, like a hidden curved gutter, required ingenuity and craftsmanship to bring to life.

CLEARVIEW STREET 5/5

Modest colorsteel cladding contrasts with cedar accents, while polished concrete floors, walnut-toned joinery, and handmade tiles create a balanced, textured interior. Decking extends the living space at one single, uninterrupted level.

“Working with Owens Building on the Clearview St project was an exceptional experience. David’s craftsmanship, attention to detail, and precision set a benchmark for quality. Bridget’s efficiency made the process seamless, reinforcing why Owens Building comes so highly recommended. Together, they create a team that elevates every project they undertake.

I will not only recommend Owens Building to my future clients but actively encourage other architects and interior designers to work with David and his team. They are a rare find in the industry, and I look forward to collaborating with them again!” - Client, Strutt Studios.

CLEARVIEW STREET 3/5

The mezzanine offers a cosy retreat with a pitched ceiling and a pop-out deck that looks out across the roofline to the lake. Asymmetrical ceiling lines and cleverly placed skylights add to the home’s unique character, creating moments of surprise and delight throughout.

BILLS WAY 5/5

Spanning 60sqm over four levels, the layout flows seamlessly from entry to communal living, down to the main bedroom, with a lofted sleeping space above.

“Having a really good builder in Owens Building, who was obsessive about finishing details was vital to making it all come together.” - Rafe Maclean.

BILLS WAY 4/5

This secondary dwelling adds space and privacy while complementing the existing home, both inspired by DOC huts and the surrounding bush.

Perched on timber piles to follow the natural slope of the site, its irregular shape is defined by curved walls, while high-volume ceilings with exposed rafters enhance the sense of space. This home is a study in form and function.

BILLS WAY 3/5

Every detail is precise, the seamless alignment of plywood sheet joins, with a refined 2mm negative detail flowing from ceilings to walls to floors an example. A handcrafted loft ladder honours the owner’s father, echoing memories of building a family bach.

Awarded Builder of Small Home of the Year 2025, Bills Way (Kaka Pod) balances structural ingenuity with a refined, contemporary aesthetic.

Built with the precision of a furniture piece, its apparent simplicity belies the complexity beneath, where bespoke solutions, like a hidden curved gutter, required ingenuity and craftsmanship to bring to life.

Judge’s citation, “A small gem full of creativity that translated into surprise and an inherent sense of calm. For such a small space, there is plenty of internal volume and light, simplicity and awe; playfulness and maturity of thought. Despite its dense context, the designers have used curvature and inspired proportions to craft a standout little nest.”
