Most plumbing problems don’t start as big problems.

They start as the tap that’s been dripping for months. The drain that’s getting a little slower. The water pressure that suddenly isn’t what it used to be.

They’re easy things to put off when everything is still working, but they’re also often the things worth paying attention to early.

After working in plenty of homes over the years, there are a few things we wish every homeowner knew. Not so you can become your own plumber, but so you know what to look out for, what’s worth investing in, and when something might need a closer look.

There are a few different ways to join copper pipework, and the right method depends on the job.

Brazing uses heat and a filler metal to create a strong, permanent connection.

It can be a good option where the pipework needs to withstand higher temperatures or pressures, or where a durable joint is particularly important.

It takes a little more skill and preparation, but in the right situation, it can be a great option for a strong, reliable connection.

We’re usually pretty focused on getting the job done, so it’s good to stop every now and then and look back at some of the work the team’s been out doing.

Winter is here, and we're definitely seeing the usual seasonal issues pop up.

Blocked drains, overloaded hot water systems and appliances that have decided they've had enough are all pretty common at this time of year.

A quick check now is often much easier (and cheaper) than an emergency call-out later.

A small part of your tap that does more than you’d think.

The aerator is the little piece at the end of your tap that helps control the water flow and stop it splashing everywhere.

They can get blocked up over time too, especially with the build-up we see in our local water.

So if your tap isn’t flowing like it used to, this could be one of the first things to check.

If you live around Warkworth, Snells Beach or the surrounding areas, you'll probably be familiar with the effects of our local water supply.

Over time, limescale and corrosion can take their toll on tapware, fittings and appliances, turning a quick repair into a full replacement.

Earthquakes are something we live with in New Zealand, which means planning for the unexpected is simply part of the job.

We recently travelled to Pōkeno to install a seismic shut-off valve on a six-inch industrial gas line at A2 Nutritionals. In the event of an earthquake or any significant ground movement, the system is designed to automatically shut off the gas supply to help protect both the site and the people working there.

Part of the project also involved safely burning off the remaining gas through a purge burner, reducing the environmental impact while ensuring gas wasn't simply released into the atmosphere.

Projects like this are a great reminder that a lot of the work we do happens behind the scenes. You hope these systems are never needed, but if they are, they need to work exactly as intended.

Really enjoyed spending the day down at the old Warkworth Fire Station.

They mentioned they're looking for someone to help them restore their old fire truck.

So I thought I'd put it out there. If you've got the skills, or know someone who does, get in touch with the Warkworth Volunteer Fire Brigade.

It'd be great to see it back on the road one day.
