** REMINDER: ON AND OFF-RAMPS AT PŪHOI CLOSED TONIGHT FROM 9PM TO 5AM **

Late last year we attempted to complete the final road surfacing on Old SH1 to Pūhoi Road in the northbound and southbound lanes of Old SH1 and at Hibiscus Coast Highway approximately 400m south of Billings Road.

Unfortunately, we had asphalt supply issues which prevented us from completing these works.

The issues have now been resolved and are looking to undertake the works from 9pm to 5am today Monday 22 January through to Thursday 1 February. Throughout this period Old SH1 will be open to traffic and managed under Stop/Go traffic management as required.

To assist in the completion of these works the southbound on-ramp and the northbound off-ramp at Pūhoi will be closed to traffic overnight on Tuesday 23 and Wednesday 24 January.

During these closures southbound traffic on Old SH1 will detour via Hibiscus Coast Highway to Grand Drive, Orewa. Northbound traffic can exit at Orewa and travel north on Hibiscus Coast Highway or continue on SH1 to Warkworth and then travel south via Old SH1.

Please note that these works are weather-dependent and cannot be conducted in the rain. Significant rain or delays in works will require works to roll over to the next suitable night.

We understand the inconvenience this may cause, especially for those in the area, and we sincerely thank the community for their patience as we finalise the surfacing upgrades on Old SH1.

We also urge people to be prepared for traffic management on the road and to slow down, be patient and respectful of our crews who are working on our roads. Their safety, like everyone else's, is a priority. Stay updated on closures by checking the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner before heading out at https://www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/.

For any construction-related queries, please reach out to our stakeholder and communications team at [email protected]. For questions about the operations and maintenance of the new road, contact 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49).

Give yourself the gift of knowledge this Christmas—use the traffic predictions to plan your holiday travel: https://www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/summer-holidays-2023/

You can start planning your holiday travel from now—the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi website has an interactive traffic prediction map showing when traffic is heaviest and quietest at 29 locations across the country.

Before you set off, enter your destination into the website for real-time travel info showing roadworks, traffic, road closures, and delays you may experience along your journey: https://www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz

Drive safely and to the conditions—slow down through roadworks, stick to the speed limit, keep left unless you're passing others, and let others pass you if you're travelling slowly.

Ahead of the summer travel period, all drivers using the Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway are encouraged to get to know the access and exit the motorway when travelling north or south.

Enforcement will apply to drivers who are either stopped or recorded driving in the wrong direction.

Police officers will follow through with the appropriate enforcement action if drivers and riders are deemed to be risking the safety of themselves and others.

And remember, you can plan your journey using the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner before heading out https://www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/

Ahead of the summer travel period, drivers on the Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway are reminded that there are no off-ramps along the motorway after Pūhoi.

If you miss your exit on the motorway, do not stop, reverse back or try to turn around – continue driving until the next exit at the Pukerito roundabout.

There is no southbound exit from the new motorway before the Northern Gateway Toll Road. This means southbound motorists must choose the toll-free route using the “Old SH1” and Hibiscus Coast Highway before they join the new motorway in Warkworth.

Motorists who accidentally enter the motorway at the Pukerito roundabout must continue south and exit at Grand Drive. Do not stop, reverse back, or try to turn around.

Drivers on the Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway are urged to plan their journey and know how to navigate on to and off the motorway.

It’s never alright to drive the wrong way down a road. It’s illegal and extremely dangerous even over short distances to all road users. Intentional wrong way driving is irresponsible and puts other road users at risk.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, NX2 Group, Auckland Transport and NZ Police are working together on a range of initiatives including signage, educating drivers and enforcement of illegal activity.

This includes monitoring illegal activity using motorway cameras, fines, and potentially stronger sanctions for drivers using the motorway and motorway on/off ramps illegally.

You can expect to see Police anywhere, anytime on our roads in an effort to deter any dangerous behaviour that impacts the safety of yourself, your passengers, and others.

With 20,000 road users a day on the Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway, it has become a popular route connecting Auckland and the north.

Drivers should be aware that it is illegal to stop on a motorway unless it is an emergency.

Motorists are advised to check trailers and vehicle loads prior to starting their journey to avoid unnecessary stops.

** UDATED DATES: NIGHT WORKS IN THE SOUTHERN CONNECTION FOR FINAL PAVING **

In previous communications, we highlighted that ongoing work would follow the motorway's opening, aimed at completing the entire project. It is now time for the final road surfacing on Old SH1 at Pūhoi Road.

These crucial works will be carried out overnight under stop/go traffic management, scheduled from 9pm to 5am so as to minimise the disruption to road users.

The existing surface of both north and southbound lanes will be milled to prepare for the application of the final pavement layers. To minimise disruptions, we will complete one lane at a time on alternate nights, allowing traffic to flow through the work zone.

Works will begin on Thursday 7 December with a closure of the northbound lane of Old SH1 from 9pm to 5am. During this time there will be minor delays to road users taking Old SH1 north to Warkworth or south via HCH. However, traffic wanting to use the on-ramp at Pūhoi to travel south via SH1 will detour via Hibiscus Coast Highway to Grand Dr, Orewa.

Further pavement works in the northbound lane resulting in the south-bound on-ramp closure will occur from 9pm to 5am Sunday 10 December.

Works in both lanes will be completed under stop / go traffic management from 9pm to 5am Monday 11 - Wednesday 13 December. The works will cause minor delays to road users as traffic is reduced to one lane.

The country’s newest motorway, Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Warkworth, opened earlier this week—here’s a reminder of some important rules for travelling on a motorway:

• You’re not allowed to stop on a motorway unless it’s an emergency such as a breakdown or a crash

• Like with any other road, you must keep left unless you’re passing others, or the lanes to your left are full—that’s the law

• Get in the correct exit lane in plenty of time, and don’t stop if you miss your exit—carry onto the next exit instead.
