This week we welcomed two cadet engineers to United Civil Construction. Both are based in Whangārei.

➡ Shweta Suresh Kumar
Shweta has been actively involved in a range of industry events, including Girls in Infrastructure and also Enginuity Day through the University of Auckland. She has also undertaken a week-long introductory engineering programme at the University of Canterbury, which included exposure to civil engineering. As part of this programme, Shweta worked with another team member to create a solar-powered miniature car.
With family members already working in civil engineering, including her sister, Shweta is passionate about building a career in the field and inspiring more women and girls to get involved in the industry.
Outside of work, Shweta enjoys keeping active at the gym, creating art, and spending time with animals, particularly horses.

➡ Connor Lambert
Connor brings a diverse background, with work experience across multiple trades including automotive panel beating, welding, and fabrication. He also has experience in retail, including car sales and working at Caltex. During this time, Connor was also part of the Trades Academy at Whangārei Boys’ High School.
Outside of work, Connor enjoys off-roading, camping, fishing and working on his vehicles.

Our team attended the Whānau as Career Educators – Infrastructure & Construction Event last night at Whangārei Boys’ High School.

The evening featured presenters from across the industry, including CCNZ - Northland Branch and Whangarei District Council, and brought together whānau, rangatahi, employers, and training providers to explore real career pathways and opportunities for students.

A key takeaway was that civil engineering and construction offer exciting, skilled career paths - not just entry-level roles, but a strong and rewarding industry with real opportunities to grow, specialise, and build a long-term career.

We heard firsthand from people across the sector - both men and women - who have progressed through diverse pathways, from administration to project management, and from trades into leadership roles. The opportunities are varied, and the pathways are exciting.

Delivered in partnership with the Ministry of Social Development NZ and Ministry of Education NZ, United Civil was proud to support the event - sharing insights and information to help guide potential students on their career journeys.
