NPM Construction were recently awarded a tender for the construction of new teaching spaces and outdoor sports facilities at Tauraroa Area School.

What an awesome result for everyone involved 👏

Thanks to an incredibly collaborative group of stakeholders, this project was delivered ahead of schedule and under budget — something we can all be proud of.

📐 Whareako: 135m² – equivalent to 2 standard teaching spaces
📐 Block A: 650m² – 6 general teaching spaces
📐 Multicourt: 1750m² – artificial courts for Hockey, Basketball, Netball & Tennis

These new spaces are a real game changer for students and staff. The difference from what was there before is huge — warm, safe, dry spaces that create a much better environment for learning and teaching. They’ll be appreciated for many years to come.

The quality speaks for itself, with every detail built to last.

Helipad Concrete Pour This Week

​Poor weather delayed last week’s concrete pour, but work is now back on track with the pour scheduled for Thursday, 19 February.

Delivered by NPM Construction for Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, the helipad enlargement will accommodate larger, heavier helicopters and strengthen the hospital’s emergency response capability.

The project has experienced a slight delay due to weather, the new expected completion date is now the end of March.

NPM Construction has been awarded the contract to enlarge the helipad at Whangārei Hospital for Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, marking another milestone in the hospital’s ongoing redevelopment.
The upgrade responds to the growing need for larger and heavier helicopters to land safely, requiring a bigger platform with a higher weight rating. The current helipad measures 12m x 12m and supports a maximum take off weight (MTOW) of 5.3 tonnes. The new structure will expand to 18.3m x 18.3m with a 6.8 tonnes MTOW, supported by cantilevered steel beams extending beyond the existing roofline.
To ensure patient services remain uninterrupted, a temporary helipad has already been constructed and is fully operational while work on the main helipad progresses.
Removal of the old helipad began last week, with Bowling Group companies Steve Bowling Contracting, SSP Engineering, and Decon working alongside NPM Construction. Concrete sections are being cut, craned from the roof, and transported for crushing and recycling, while extensive cleaning and roof maintenance prepare the site for the new build.
This complex project has required detailed planning with Health NZ Te Tai Tokerau Infrastructure, hospital management teams, engineers, designers, sub trades, and Northern Rescue Helicopters Limited (NRHL) to minimise disruption to hospital operations.
Once complete, the new helipad will provide Whangārei Hospital with a larger, more resilient landing platform, ensuring patients can continue to receive urgent care quickly and efficiently.

NPM recently completed an internal refurbishment & external upgrades to the Transit Lounge at the Whangarei Hospital for Health NZ - Northland. The Transit Lounge, formerly known as the Discharge Lounge, serves to provide a place for patients and whanau to wait for prescriptions or transport after they have been discharged from hospital.

The works included but were not limited to: Relocation & demolition of existing internal walls, construction of new partitions, refurbishment of internal areas, coordination & management of subcontractors (electrical, HVAC, Plumbing, medical gases, data & communications, fire protection), carpark refurbishment, ramp construction & landscaping.

The Transit Lounge was formally opened on 25th February 2025, by the Minister of Health, Hon Simeon Brown.

NPM is proud to have delivered another outstanding project at the Whangarei Hospital. We know this will have a big impact on the wider community as they use the newly completed space at the end of their hospital stay.
