An innovative way of storing hydrogen that is safe, compact, and energy efficient. When metal powders are burned, energy is released and the metals turn into metal oxides, also known as rust. The energy can be used in, for example, big industrial processes or large scale transport. The metal oxides formed during the combustion are captured. Later, these can be reduced back to metal powder, by usin
g green energy. This circular process thus functions as a sustainable energy storage system, in which energy can be stored in the reduction and released again during combustion. In 2018 we realised a lab scale proof-of-concept using an iron-based energy storage system. Currently we are working on taking this technology out of the lab, into the industry. Together with our partners we are building a scalable unit, that in early 2020 will demonstrate the first industrial application of metal fuels.
