Honeybees Are Smarter Than You Think
Honeybees possess fascinating cognitive abilities, including their capacity to differentiate between odd and even numbers, a trait shared only with humans. While humans have 86 billion neurons in their brains, honeybees have 960,000 neurons. In a recent study, researchers demonstrated that honeybees can successfully execute parity tasks, which involve the categorization of odd and even numbers, despite being abstract and high-level numerical concepts. The study involved training bees in a parity task exercise, with one group associating odd numbers with sugar water. The trained bees showed faster learning progress compared to the second group. Subsequently, when tested with new numbers not shown during the training, the bees demonstrated a 70% accuracy in categorizing them. Although the exact processes used by bees to perform the parity task remain unknown, the study provides insights into the potential simplicity or complexity of their cognitive processes. Apart from differentiating between odd and even numbers, honeybees possess other remarkable cognitive abilities. They can learn to order quantities, perform basic addition and subtraction, match symbols with quantities, and understand the relationship between size and number concepts.
